Hello!!

I'm thinking of buying a Breitling watch but I think I can only afford to get one in this lifetime...heh...

So which Series or exact model do you think I should get if this is going to be my one and only Breitling watch...or any other "luxury" watch for that matter?

That's perhaps the most difficult question of all. The truth is that what's good for one person might not be for another.

Fist think about functionality, then narrow your results by stopping by an AD and trying a few on. See which one works best for you.

Yeah, Super Avenger....

BUT: the best thing is still to go to a large AD and try out as many as possible to see for yourself what you like.

I can recommend Chronomat, SA and Superocean from my own experience, and if you want to spend some more (since you are only buying one?) check out the Bentley-line.

They are all worthy of being your only one. It just comes down to which one you like the best.

That's quite a rare request on this forum! Most people ask the question, "Which shall I buy now from my list of 20 that I'll eventually end up buying anyway"!

Sorry, but I can't give any better advice than what's already been said. There are so many factors to consider - price, intended use, your wrist size, functionality, material, etc, etc.

For example, if want to use it everyday and in all conditions (from swimming to DIY) then a quartz Aeromarine model may suit the best.

If you plan to use it everyday, but being a little more careful with your usage (i.e. no hammer-drilling or DIY) then an Aeromarine automatic may suit your needs. (Autos are a bit more in keeping with the "luxury watch ethos" IMHO.... but some people will contest that! ).

If you like the super-accuracy of quartz and fancy a technical look to your watch, then a Professional model may suit you.... but you won't get an auto, unless you go for the Skyracer.

If you plan to keep it for "best" and not swim or otherwise abuse it, then a classic Navitimer may suit.... or if you want to blow a bit more cash, then a Bentley model may be seen as "the ultimate".

Alternatively if you prefer a bit more of a contemporary look rather than classic, but less than the semi-industrial look of the Aeromarine models, then you can't go wrong with a Chromat or Blackbird from the Windrider range.

The list goes on and on...... and that's before we even start talking about sizes!

The best bet really is to visit an AD with a large range in stock and just try a few on. Take your time and ask questions... lots of them! Any AD worth his/her salt will be knowledgeable (although a lot aren't!), and will be more than happy to spend some time with you while you contemplate your purchase. Make sure you wear each piece for a few minutes too, as what can initially seem too big or too small may take on a different feel after a couple of mins - this is especially true of the bigger pieces.

At the end of the day one will "speak" to you and you'll know. Buy what you like as you can't go wrong with any Breitling. Good luck!

I only got one - but I went for a classic design. Mina also was the cheapest model!

Very difficult question, and you've got very good answers what to look for...

However, not so many actual suggestions. If it would be me, only buying one watch it would probably be a dark dial Chronomat with roman numerals. I haven't got there myself yet though... But - if I had to start over and get just one, this would be the one.

I see the Chronomat as the safe bet. Its a watch thats hard to dislike. I do think that you can get one that is more specific to your likings if you look at all the models though. It may end up being the chronomat afterall.

I am also with driver on that one...

It all depends on what you are using the watch for...mostly dinner meetings etc? just hanging out? just want to own a nice piece?

There are quite a few but as you said....if you REALLY think its your one and only piece (which many of us said that and look at all the members that own more than one) then I would spend a lil more...BUT in reality...we doubt it will be your one and only

I will offer up a suggestion as well. If you are looking for a bigger sized watch, the Super Avenger is really a lot of watch for your money. Not to mention a very popular one at that! My guess is that if you fall in love with one Breitling and you hang around here for to long, your going to figure out a way to get another.

I'm going to respectfully dissent with the majority regarding the Super Avenger. It's proportions are very extreme for an only watch.

I would recommend the Aerospace. It is, in my opinion, the most well-rounded watch in the Breitling line: versatile, comfortable, and functional. Of course, it is also very under-stated, something a number of Breitling owners seem frown upon (check the Full Ling crowd). If you're looking for something with a bolder presence that lacks the digital display, I'd look into the Avenger Seawolf Chrono. That's a killer design.

Or, if you are a quartz-o-phobe as are most luxury watch collectors, I would recommend a Navitimer. Also very versatile and a true Breitling icon.

Very difficult question that we've all struggled with. Keep researching them on the web, spend time at an AD or 2 and the answer will come to you.

I went with a Bentley GT and thought that was it for me. But after hanging out on this site for a while, I couldn't resist another. Just ordered a Monty Olympus today!!!
