After much negotiating and a journey to another country to pick it up i am now the proud owner of my first top time, i suspect not my last. Thanks Fred for your advice. pictures should be attached ! i have a few questions.....

1.Is there anywhere reliable to get it serviced in the uk?
2. Is there any way of dating it without taking the back/front off to look at the serial number? were the 2000,s manufactured between certain dates? The reason I ask this is because I am 50 this year and it would be great if it was the same age (1963) as me !!
3. Straps, is there a specific strap for this watch? if not where can I purchase a reasonably priced black croc with gold tang?
4. winding... should it be wound clockwise/away from me with the crown in? sounds like a daft question but i,m feeling a slight resistance and i dont want to damage anything.
thanks in advance
Tony

Congratulations!

It could be a 63, but I'm not familiar with any subtleties on these that would allow precise dating without a serial number. In terms of servicing, most people will use member chronodeco (Craig) in the US, regardless of where they are. Winding is away from you and with a manual wind you will feel considerable resistance when the mainspring is fully wound - that's your cue to stop! Some resistance is normal as you are overcoming hte gears in the keyless works and the click spring as well as the natural resistance of the mainspring.

Others will be better able to comment on appropriate straps, but that one doesn't look bad at all. Looks like you already have a gold tang buckle so not sure why you need another?

your are most welcome, Tony. this is a GREAT set, very nice watch and super rare box, congrats again.

I second the Craig advice, this is where my watches go, from Austria.

that strap is fine, I tend to use chocolate brown croc straps on these GP TopTimes, dark honey croc or tan calf are nice too, but the buckle is perfect, there were no branded GP buckles in that period afaik.

afraid well miss your birth year, the 2000s were launched in 64, this seems to be an early piece, but we'll only know when we get the serial number that will be stamped inside the caseback.

wear it in health & pride.

On the strap, yours looks fine but I tend to go with black with black stitching for gold watches. Maybe that's jus me. I mean, there is white in the dial so the white stitching goes with that.
On my SS 2002, I wear it on a breitling 18-16 smooth leather with white stitching and a classic breitling buckle. I think the taper is very nice to give that vintage feel. I have also seen some very nice results with a Rallye style strap. I recently was passed this site:
Tonewatch.com
I really want to give their Rallye strap a try with a different stitch color.

I think this would be a real winner for that slightly more sporty feel.
