I have sold a few watches on eBay and on some watch web sites. At no time did I ever hide the serial number of the watch in my auction listings or forum postings. I have notice some people blur out the serial number of the watch they are selling. What is the fear of your serial number being shown?


Second question:

Does the serial number give any indication of the age of a Breitling watch? Example, if a seawolf has a higher serial number than another seawolf, would the higher serial number be a newer production watch.

One could, perhaps, tell Breitling that the watch is stolen by providing them with the serial number. Thus, rendering your watch "useless" and marked as "stolen goods."

This comes upevery now and then and a number of different reasons that search can show you or that people will repeat again. You cannot date a modern Breitling with the serial number, you do it this way - http://www.breitlingsource.com/articles_dating.shtml

Problem is you can not see the date code on an auction.

Well that's the only way that you can date them!

At least the reason I have done this is since it is about to be someone else's timepiece that it is better safe than sorry as some buyers may not want the SN plastered on the net. It could also provide con artists with a legit SN which they (in the past) have utilized (there are a few very common ones that many people here seem to know by heart), and if someone wanted to be a real jerk, they could try using that SN for services/reports through Breitling. It's probably unnecessary 99.9% of the time but I always stay on the side of caution with that. I generally blur half the numbers to show it is there rather than all.

If you read my original post, I wasn't looking to date a watch.

I've wondered this as well in the past, and the main reason I'd cover it up as a seller is to prevent other people copying it for franken's.

My main worry as a buyer of course is that it is covered up because it's stolen and the SN is plastered across the various forums by a frantic owner trying to find their lost watch.
