I'm in the midst of purchasing a watch and the current owner said this scratch on the clasp could be polished out but I wanted to get some second opinions. Thank you!

Yes. Assuming it's not too deep (and I can't really tell from the pciture) it will polish out fine.

It's tough for me to tell how deep it is from just the picture. However, since it's on the clasp, you shouldn't have an issue with removing a fair amount of metal. Worst case, you could purchase a new clasp. I'm not sure what they're going for, but I would expect several hundred dollars.

Hard to tell from the picture, I'd need to run my nail across it! It is likely to take alot of effort to remove that with a cape cod cloth but a more aggressive method such as using a dremel may work. At any rate you should be able to reduce the obviousness of it. I'd ask why he hasn't taken the effort to polish it out himself before selling and try to get a few more bucks off it!.

Hi,

As the others have said it's a bit hard to tell from photos, but I'd be quite positive about the chances of it polishing out. I bought brand new watches (a Chrono-matic and a Chrono Cockpit) from an AD in Melbourne in 2009, both of which had scuffs/scratches on the clasps in the same position. I don't know how they got there (careless handling I presume), but they both polished back to flawless 'new' condition within a few minutes spent with a Cape Cod polishing cloth. Bear in mind the clasp will bear the brunt of wear and tear when you wear it anyway, so small marks are inevitable.
If the Cape Cod doesn't work it should be easy for a jeweller or watchmaker to do, those broader scuff type marks are easier than a scratch or gouge type mark to polish out in general (in my experience anyway).
All the best with the decision-making, I've included a couple of photos to show the marks that I had to give you some reference. I'm afraid I don't have any 'after' shots, and the watches are back in Australia at the moment so you'll have to take my word for the results.

That's a good price for a used one, I just purchased the exact one online brand new from watchmaxx.com for $4,095. Take it to a jewelry and have the whole piece polished, it will look brand new. Enjoy
