One plus with Rolex though is that it seems if you hold it long enough, it will be worth as much as you paid or more on the used market if you ever sell it...it is amazing what I see late 1980s Sea Dwellers sell for...

There are so much more of them these days though... Better go for a yacht master if value retention is an issue... Not many of those around and by the time I'll be a classic, that could matter.

Size of watch not an issue I believe as have 8" wrist - current Panerai looks ok for size - think I could get away with a bit bigger.... Rolex looks nice on too though when at boutique yesterday!!

Nice? Sure, but when you consider you could have so many nicer rolexes with that kind of money. An then there's the chapter ring... Original Gas Escape? That's like writing Original Steering Wheel in great big letters down the side of a Mercedes... But then again, a Merc doesn't say "MercedesMercedesMercedes" all around it's tires either.

The Pam looks great on your wrist and I'm guessing you might be able to pull off a larger one.

That text was my biggest concern prior to trying the thing on but I didn't really notice it when wearing so was quite pleased with that. As for other Rolex's, there aren't really any others I like... Submariners are nice but I can't walk 20 feet without seeing one here in my office; Daytona in SS - nice but long wait - at least here in the UK! I'm not after a 'Rolex' per se, if I don't go for the DSSD, I'll go for the Panerai probably - maybe a car! Not a Merc though!

The gas escape text always comes out very pronounced in pictures, but in person its not really noticeable unless you look for it.

True, it is however still there and it still looks cheap to me. One may not see it on first glance, but that doesn't exactly make it discreet.

I would be edging towards the Rolex.

Have you considered trying to pick both up second hand. Would the combined second value be much more that the new price of one peice?

Just tried a 372 on at my local AD in London. Liked it very much but have flipped my deposit on to a 422. That plexiglas and my OCD probably wouldn't go hand in hand!

47mm looks ok though I think... Not too big which was a concern...

That's looking great!

Doesn't the 422 have a plexiglas as well? Small seconds aside, it is rather similar to the 372.

I told you 422 is where it's at!!

Small seconds, sapphire glass, and secret power reserve indicator on back.

i own both, love both, so very different.

i dont know why everyone is so fast to hate on the plexi crystal, a. any scratches are easily polished out, b. it comes with a spare anyway and c. its period correct, its a throwback watch.

btw i have a new 372, a spare one, i can sell you less that you can find any new one for sure.
