Edited to add a 4th option with option to revote for the 8 people who already voted before the 4th option was added.

Edit, looks like the change wiped out all original votes - sorry guys, but only up for 3 hours or so and only 8 votes cast.

While we are compiling our candidates list for the best Breitling ever, I wanted to get some input on determining match ups.

All match ups will be head to head (think March Madness / Tennis / Match Play Golf) with the winner advancing. There are a few online tools that can help, but all seem to require people to register so we may just handle it here.

For now I want your thoughts on how we determine the match ups. There are thousands of options, but which of the following would you prefer:

1) Random. Selection of match ups in every round are randomly selected. Advantage is that it's easy, disadvantage is that the two 'favourites' may meet in the first round.

2) Pure seeding. All watches are ranked 1 through x and top plays bottom - March Madness style. Keeps favourites apart but may lead to predictability and requires someone to seed them (which will no doubt lead to arguments)

3) Block seeding. All watches are grouped into 1 of (probably) 4 groups with all of the 1s playing 4s in the first round and 2s playing 3s, assignment across groups is random. 1s are also kept apart in round 2. Still requires someone to group them and may still be contentious.

4) Grouped match ups - Chronomat family competition, Navitimer family competition, etc with winners facing off.

What about match ups with categories. For example, Chronomats in one bracket, Navi's in another bracket, Super Oceans / TransOceans in another etc. Get a champion from each bracket and have a final four among the four categories. Could even have a vintage bracket. Since there are so few in-house models that wouldn't make too much sense.

Go random (option 1) - it's the only way to avoid arguments I reckon.

I guess it has to be random. The champion will rise!

No one likes coming up with the ultimate Navi and the ultimate Chronomat, and two other ultimates, then a final four showdown for the champion? I think that's more entertaining and fun to watch.

Actually, I like this as well. Seeding is hopeless. Random might work but I'm trying to decide if what I really want is exactly what Serge is proposing. I think we could have two or three Navitimers going up against each other in a final four. It would be okay but i suspect there might be less sustained interest. Just thinking out loud here, could be easily swayed another way.

I edited the first post to add this option as it is materially different from the other three and allowed for revoting for anyone of the 8 people who voted to this point who want to change.

With so many different categories of watches made by Breitling, could you really compare certain ones?...like a Bentley GT to an Emergency, or a Navi to a Superocean/Seawolf? If you are a technical diver, one that adventures to remote places where a normal cell or satellite phone may not work, or if you fly, you're going to look at one type of watch very differently than the others. I love the Navi, but I don't know the first thing about planes other than there are a lot of friggin dials in the cockpit that I know nothing about...but I do like to dive and therefore Breitling watches with the Helium Escape Valve and uni-bezel fascinate me more than ones with say, a tachymeter.

While I'd really like the idea of true seeding in a tournament it would be near imposible since it is so up to personal taste. I love all the history and heritage of the Navis but probably have 10 other watched I plunk my $$$ down on first. The Unitime 206 is a landmark watch in my book, but is it really better or worse than an Chronomat? I think random is the only way. Perhaps in this set of brackets a 16 will actually knock off a number 1.

Can't wait for watch madness to start. We need a side thread with some prognostication of the future final 4. Perhaps a friendly side wager to get in that thread :cigar2: $5 to enter with 1/2 the pot a donation to BS. You have to name the final 4, 2 and 1 before the brackets even come out but after the 64 are named.

Random for me... seems to be the only fair way to do it. As nickzac pointed out he'll go for any dive watches and I'm sure his ideal final would be 2 dive watches. Whereas mine would be 2 navi's head to head in the final. Group match-ups would stop this, and for both nickzac and myself put watches we don't like so much into the final.

Multiply this out across everyone, and you can see the difficulty with group seeding.

Hence why I went random :)

(also these days it is hard to put all the breitling's into groups!)

I'll leave this up until we get to 64 candidates in the other thread and then lock it down, so get your vote in if you haven't already.
