The Olympics product placement deal was an example of rather successful advertising, actually.

31000 result on google, widely discussed on mainstream media & all relevant WIS blogs.
No idea what it cost them, but I am sure RM is quite happy with the results.

I read some where that it was a $500,000 watch; so at least that much.

After all this media attention, Blake will need a body guard for that wrist.

do we know Blake got to keep the watch - would not be surprised if this watch already sits on some Oligarchs wrist ?
even if he got to keep it, we are talking about 500k list price, manufacturing costs should be a fraction.

and even for the 500k it would be a coup, have you seen the Christies blog headline ?
"The Fastest Watch at the London Olympics? That Would be Richard Mille"
http://blogs.christies.com/longitude/wa ... ard-mille/

brilliant product placement.

If someone wore a Big Pilot at the Olympics then Driver may say that was the fastest watch at the Olympics.

I'm buying a blue sky navi and the only reason I'm buying it is because I saw Travolta wearing it, so advertising must work right.

What kind of question is that??? Put Jordan's name on a pair of Nikes and they sell millions, don't put his name on them and they'll end up on clearance at khols for $39.99. Sports marketing works extremely well.

The question is if advertising for 500'000$ products works the same way as advertising for Nike shoes. There are certainly a lot less of potential customers. But on the other hand you don't have to sell millions of pieces.

You clearly underestimate the desire of the average parvenu to be part of the exclusive circle of persons envied and admired by others.

Sportsman XZY is being approached by luxury brand A in order to be an ambassador because he made it. Ergo, A's products are for those who made it. And who does not want to show the world he did indeed make it (or believes to have done), when he's clearly been able to put himself in a position to purchase one. What good is a status symbol if no one knows it is one.

Advertising is about making things desirable, not merely about selling things.

I think you mean Rafael Nadal, Federer is a Rolex ambassador.

I saw Serge's post about the Olympian with the $500,000 Richard Mille, it's obviously to advertise. Do people actually see celebrities, or athletes, wearing watches and thing "oh, I'm going to buy that!" - Does advertising work?

In short, yes.

Omega dealers tell me they get a surge every time the Olympics occur, and often with Bond movie releases. George Clooney also boosts their sales (after he raises $12 million for Obama in the name of social welfare, supports tax hikes across the board, and then leaves on his 500 million dollar yacht)

And there are sites dedicated solely to this...
http://www.watch-id.com/

And then partnerships help too...Audi winning Lemans under the Bentley name was huge for not only the Bentley brand, but also Breitling given the Speed 8 wore the name and there were quite a few Breitling commercials. Dealers who remember this have noted this gave a surge on 'Ling sales.

It's to get as many "eyeballs" as possible, and to keep the brand fresh in the consumers' minds. You can't buy what you don't remember.

 Only just read that! Sadly very true!

My Big Lemon - sorry, I mean Big Pilot - has finally beaten me down and it's actually currently in the middle of being sold. I should be shot of it by the weekend.

It's a shame because it's an incredible looking watch IMO, but the appalling timekeeping (and IWC's inability to fix it) took the shine off it to such an extent that I started to resent it. And it's not ideal to resent a £10K watch!

It is indeed such a shame because it is a nice watch... Hey at least you'll have some funds freed up now. What can we expect Driver?
