I just wanted to ask if you have to pay VAT on a used watch in the UK if I bought one from the US or EU? If so do I need to add 20% or is it less because it's used? If I do have to do you pay tax on the watch or the total price including shipping?

Thanks.

It used to be about 24% of the value of the item

You will have to pay import duties on anything from the US though.

So you pay VAT for the country where purchased? What if the VAT in your home country is lower? Can you pay in your home country and get it rebated in the country of purchase (that's how it works here in Switzerland).

Thanks.

I just sold a used watch to a gentleman in the UK (I'm in the US). He had to pay a duty/VAT of about 21-22% of the value declared on customs form (value was legit and accurate). I don't know if shipping was included in calculation or not. Delivery was today and heard back from buyer this morning so this is very recent info.

Hope this helps.

So since I am in the UK, if I buy a new or used watch from anywhere in the EU I won't have to pay any VAT since it is already paid. IS that correct? Would I get hit with any other "surprise" fees from customs?
