A little bit off topic... But I have been wondering this for a while. Where does Breitling stand in terms of modifying an ETA movement compared to other brands. Are they one of the most modified?

Nope, omegas co-axial is the most modified ETA movement I think. As for breitling..........anything and everything that is done to the movement can be ordered from eta. Including engraving of the name on the rotor. Who knows, maybe breitling doesn't do anything but pop them in. But j can't say what or what they do or don't do to the movements. I don't work there

Ill go out on a limb and say that this is a far more modified ETA than Omega's co-axial.

Just looked up SPS on Urban Dictionary. One definition stands out as what Watchbro likely meant, but some of the others are pretty funny:

- Saucy Puppet Show

- Straight Pound Session

- Standardized Pump Scale

- Skate Park Slut

- Small Penis Syndrome*

- Skinny Pants Syndrome

- Smelly Pu**y Syndrome

- Santorum-Palin Smegma

Quite the versatile acronym. No wonder not everyone knew what it meant.

*I'm guessing this is what Watchbro meant.

quite versatile, some more he might have meant :

Sensory-processing sensitivity, a psychological term to describe a highly sensitive person
Simple partial seizure, a seizure which affects only a small region of the brain
Stiff person syndrome, a rare neurologic disorder

I had to look it up too.

Being in this part of the world, the first result I got was South Pacific Seeds.

What happens when Swatch Group no longer sells ETA ebauches outside of their own company? What will happen to owners of Breitling watches with the ETA 7750 and 2892/4 units in them? Can they still be serviced by Breitling 10, 20, 30 yrs down the road? I mean, if Swatch will only sell full movements, won't that mean that if Breitling can't embellish/modify the base movements any longer, when you get your watch repaired/serviced, they'll plop in base units/parts that are unfinished?

Well Breitling can manufacture their own "ETA"-parts since they manufacture their own movements. Don't think it'll be hard for them to set the CNC-machine to do some other shape.

Sellita have been producing ETA movements for years as well. ETA will never be allowed to completely stop supply (at least not for decades) and parts will still be available I'm sure, but it's 'just' a mechanical movement, it's not difficult to fabricate parts.

I hesitate to post in such an emotionally charged thread (although my hat is also doffed for a classy apology) - but just wanted to clarify that the new in-house movements (01, 04) are Manufacture and not ETA based, aren't they? So I guess that ETA movements will slowly be phased out of Breitlings as the in-house movements come in?

By definition they can't be ETA if they are in-house, but Breitling has always said that they are geared up to produce 50,000 in-house movements per year and in the down years of the recession they still produced over 100,000 watches so they will be using ETA (or at least ETA designs) for a long time to come.

That's what I thought - interesting what you say about the ETA movements though. I'd heard somewhere that ETA were no longer going to provide ebauches, just complete movements, which wouldn't suit companies like Breitling - hence the move towards in-house. As you say though, if they've only geared up make enough in-house movements to satisfy 1/2 their production requirements then my information must be wrong. I'll mentally cross that bit of information out :D

ETA has been saying that for more than a decade and there has been a lot of protracted legal wrangling going on over the years. Bottom line is that ETA have been permitted by the Swiss regulators to reduce supply to 3rd parties, but they are still supplying 85 - 90% of the volume that they have been in the past.

Additionally, the copyright protection on these movements expired a long time ago so there is nothing preventing Breitling from producing their own copies of ETA movements - just like Sellita (and others) have been doing for years.
