We always hear that "I purchased it from a store that was closing". So my question is... these online places have tons of watches, how do they find out about a store thats closing?

....and yet no one has any problem buying from companies like authenticwatches and joma. where are they getting there crap from?

A lot of people have problems buying from them. As you will see when you look at the other threads that Wessa mentioned, they get stock from ADs who sell to them just to maintain the required sales volumes to keep their Breitling contract.

Right and they don't learn by mysterious means when an AD is going under or no longer carrying a brand. It is the AD who goes to the grey market dealer to dump the inventory.

Interesting read, and a must for any newbie. I knew most of it, but some of it was eye-opening. For instance, it's a felony in Georgia to own a watch that has had its serial number removed. Yikes!

Im not sure how prevalent serial removal is these days since I havent seen it for a while. I know that as recent as a couple of years ago though, authenticwatches was doing it. It seems that they no longer do though.

First, I suspect any so-called law without a checkable citation. Second, the application of a statute can be strongly affected by court decisions. Third, the language quoted on the subject web page requires quite a bit more than simple ownership, to constitute a crime --it requires that the number must have been removed to conceal or destroy the identity of the item, and that the owner must know this.

OK, you got me. I made the mistake of taking the post at face value. In my defense, this issue is not something I'm terribly concerned about, and I'm up to my eyebrows in legal research for things that actually ARE important right now (to me and those involved with them); so I wasn't inclined to actually go into Lexis and do some research on Georgia law. If it was something that actually mattered, I can assure you I wouldn't accept the word of some watch forum post.

That said, it was startling to me to think that, if the statute was presented correctly in the post, there was even the possibility one could be violating it by wearing a watch that has had its serial number removed. True, there is still the underlying mens rea requirement, but if you're down to arguing mens rea, you're already in a place you don't want to be.

I'd think that's a place the prosecution wouldn't want to be, on this type of case, with no other chargeable crimes.

You're probably right. I was just looking at it from the perspective of someone who is facing prosecution; however likely the victory, that's not where you want to be. It is probably academic, though. I imagine a case like this wouldn't even be prosecuted in the first place, since the way the statute is written (again, taking the post at face value) suggests it is targeting stolen property, not gray market sales. Hopefully a prosecutor or the police would have enough sense to realize that.

I'm not sure I'd want to be in the position of relying on the sense of Georgia police.
