I got to thinking when I read Wessa's thread regarding the Planet Ocean.

Since I gifted my Omega Seamaster 300M as a retirement gift to my dad I've been lacking a great divers watch. Specifically a watch that I can wear without having to worry about polishing all the time.

I'm currently considering Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 46mm or Omega Planet Ocean XL. Both in black dials and with SS bracelets. As far as I see it the Omega is really really awesome value for the money spent so this is basically a question if Breitling can win me over again. I see the amazing finish Omega puts down nowdays and they've got inhouse movements, display backs and ceramic bezel. Breitling has a great heritage and is a couple of hundred bucks cheaper. But what does Breitling bring to the table with the SOH?

Take a vote, spread your thoughts and help me on my way.

That's not even a fair competition in my opinion if we're comparing the PO 8500 to a SOH. Even the previous non inhouse PO is nicer look IMO than the SOH.

I've said I so many times now, the PO 8500 is one of the best values out there because of all the things you listed. I love the look of the PO 8500 but that's the most important part, which one do you love the look of?

I actually really like both but the Planet Ocean is really the nicer one in comparison. It's amazing in all aspects. Off to the AD tomorrow and scope it out. Hopefully they'll have it in stock.

In one sense this should be simple. Omega has the better movement, a lume pip on the bezel (these are dive watches after all) and a ceramic bezel. In terms of specifications, how they're equipped, the Omega runs away with it. But to me they are similar in classification only. The PO is a dive watch dressed up. The SOH is a retro watch, a desk diver at heart that could dive. The look is straight from the original Superocean but the case is high polish, again more like a desk diver. Both can be worn formally though I'd actually favor the SOH for that. Frankly, bracelets are a personal call, as for some reason I don't care for them on either, which is probably why I haven't bought a PO before now. Mesh on the Breitling is polarizing, and for all the beautiful finishing Omega does on the PO case, the bracelet, though well constructed, just seems flat-looking and underwhelming. If you're going with a rubber or leather strap though, Omega makes some really cool rubber straps and of course the Breitling deployment for rubber is tremendous. The watches are different enough in appearance that it might be worth a look at the rest of your collection to see which one fits a need better. If forced to make a call, I'd say Omega. Now, watch me show up with a 42mm SOH in a month or two, to show you just how definitive my vote is here.

All these are just observations, however. Serge is of course correct--the one that appeals to you is the one to get.

I really like both of these watches. I think the SOH looks very nice, for me the more classic of the two. Clearly, the PO is a more functional dive watch but for most of us, the "dive" in dive watch is a name more than a function. But functionality isn't all the PO has to offer. The wonderfully decorated in-house movement, display back, ceramic bezel, beautiful dial are all important features for me. The four year warranty doesn't hurt either. While I'd be happy to own either, I'd rather have the PO. To Breitling's credit, the SOH is significantly less expensive than the PO which could be a factor. Still, my money will go to the PO.

I voted for the Omega. The one thing I'll probably never like is the mesh bracelet and that's the only option with the SOH.

To this day I can't get past the mesh as an afterthought toss in. And I've had a couple of them. The SOH is ok in my book, but just doesn't have any real zing to it. The PO is a terrific watch aesthetically and functionally. No contest.

Both are nice, but the PO is much better IMHO. Comparing prices, the PO 2500 is a lot closer to the SOH. the PO 8500 is a lot more $$, but a lot more watch. As someone else stated, the PO is a real dive watch that also looks great. The SOH is a nice looking piece, that you "could" dive with. The PO bracelets are superb, but lack the micro adjustment. I'm wearing my PO xl 2500 as I type and love it. But the 8500 is on my radar. :)

Totally agree - the poor SOH isn't in the same league as the latest 8500 PO. I dunno about taking a knife to a gun-fight ; it's more like taking a spud-gun to a tank fight. (OK, maybe not quite that bad....., but close!)

The reason I'm comparing these models are not because they're similar in other aspect then that they're lacking chronograph and they're decently close in their price range. About 29 000SEK for the SOH and about 33 000SEK for the PO XL.

But I really like the PO. Amazing value for the money. I'll know for sure if I can try one out at the AD tomorrow.

That's the price for the PO 8500? I think that here the price difference is more like 50% - roughly 4000chf vs 6000chf.
