Either an EP or a 5001 will make a wonderful gift. I'm a little curious though, what were your siblings' objections to the GO? They know watches and don't like the brand? They don't know watches but insisted that it be Swiss? Anyway, I'm sure your Dad will be thrilled with either option.

Pretty much all of the above; they have a fair knowledge of watches, insisted on Swiss, and fell kind of flat with the GO brand...believe me I tried! Thanks David, I agree, I'm sure my father will happy with either choice.

well, a bit out of my current budget  , but a dream watch was just listed on the bay,
a Breguet Classique Alarm "Le Reveil Du Tsar", white gold. fits your specs quite well ...

:wowzers OMG what a beautiful watch! Unfortunately ebay sales are already out of the question. This limits me to the ADs in the Greater Toronto area (where I am) and down in the San Francisco Bay area (brother).

I have some pieces that I obsess over and then they fade away. This one I WILL get. Never got tired of this one.

I just checked one out today for the first time and it looks 10x better in person. 37mm put me off, but it looks waaay bigger in person. That thing is just beautiful.

I feel like a dumbass for asking this, but it the El Primero an in-house movement? (This isn't totally on topic, but the discussion of the watch got me to wondering.)

in a way the most in-house of all current automatic chronographs, as it is based on the world's first integrated caliber developed by Zenith and launched at the Basel fair 1969. Interesting history and some nice "miraculous resurrection" stories, too.

Wasn't the cal.11 first one, but unofficial?

endless discussion here who was first or not, announced or shipping, this is why I wrote "integrated caliber", the El Primero definitely is the first in this respect, CAL.11 was using an "add-on" chronograph module developed by Dubois-Depraz.

It seems to be clear that Cal.11 shipped before the El Primero, though in reality Seiko might have been even earlier ?

but to quote Sharkman: the short answer without my historical/horological meanderings re in-house: Yes !

Thanks for clarification, Fred.
I also heard that Seiko might be the first.

Thanks, guys. No need to apologize for historical meanderings - I find them interesting. Although the short answer certainly sufficed as well. :D

I notice a lot of you guys are going high end watches. I like to keep my expectations a bit more realistic to my wallet size!

I really like the Bremont P51

Its built using parts crafted from parts of a WWII P51 fighter plane.

And it has one of the nicest display backs Ive seen

Although it was a LE, its still available if you look hard enough (there are US distributers)

The question was about the prettiest movement, which for me rules out anything that isn't in house - an ETA movement will only ever be an ETA movement and the ability to 'pretty it up' will always be rather limited. Additionally, OP mentioned a budget of $20,000,

Ive seen that watch in person a couple of times, and it does have a very nice display back. Probably the best that Bremont offers. But if you gave me a 20k budget, id be looking for something nicer.
