My 5 months old Breitling was running about 40-50 sec fast per day. It was shipped to Breitling and just received the call yesterday. The rep advised watch was running fast due to loose amplitude and needs to be tightened? I regret not asking what this means before ending the call. Is this normal occurance for automatic watches? Should I be concern in the future with this watch? Thanks for advise....

"The measure of the amount of rotation in the swing of the balance wheel, in either direction, usually expressed in degrees. In a running watch, the balance wheel swings or rotates clockwise and counterclockwise. Each swing in either direction is called a “beat”. Amplitude is the number of degrees of rotation of the beat."

So basically Bretiling was telling you the balance was "messed up" (which is the correct technical phrase in horology ).

Essentially what Breitling has done is shortened the hairspring, adding tension to it which in turn will increase the amplitude (more energy to swing the balance). This in turn reduces the frequency and slows the rate. We would usually just refer to it as a regulation (if we want to be slightly more accurate than Sharkman's description).

Was it always running that fast from date of purchase?

Like I said - "messed up."

I just took a course at work called "Executive Writing Skills" - basically, in the course you are taught to write in a simple fashion, trying not to use too many three syllable words (Flesch-Kincaid), and removing any words that don't add value to a sentence. Sharkman, your sentence is highly "Executive Writing" friendly

Was it always running that fast from date of purchase?

Yes this watch has been running fast since the purchase. Is this mean my watch was defective from the start? I don't want to run into any issues down the line after warranty expires.

It does indicate the problem they repaired was there from the start, but if they fixed it, it should not continue to be a problem. You will know right away if they didn't do the job right, so your warranty period should not be a concern.

It is an adjustment; not a defective part or product.
