It's horses for courses. My Colt SQ has lost half a second in about six weeks (since it arrived from your shop!). I know super accuracy isn't everything, but in a watch, it's not negligible...

I quite fancied one of the retro-styled Seiko quartz radio controlled solar digitals; no need for a battery ever and sets the time by radio signal at night so always accurate.

Except that in the UK, they sometimes sync to the wrong signal and end up an hour out.

So every morning it's necessary to check the radio controlled always accurate watch against something a bit more basic to see if you're late for work or not...

I decided against

I heard the same thing said of the radio-controlled G-Shocks. As you say, something of a disincentive...

I must admit having a dilemma about quartz models as well. Even though my first Breitling, which I had for over 5 years, was a Colt Quartz.
Having wanted a Cartier Tank for so long, I was really holding back on the Tank Solo, always wanting a manual wind movement. They have an inhouse quart movement. I love the simplicity of the dial, no date window, and it quite simply is the only Tank I can afford. Well, a couple weeks ago, I finally got myself one. I have absolutely no regrets.
The watch quality is superb, and the quartz movement is perfect for me. I wear my Omega Speedy all week, so it is getting worn and wound constantly. I still wind it on the weekend, but keep it crown down, and it loses most of the time it gained during the week. And, no harm done leaving the Cartier quartz in it's box all week.
I do have two excellent watches with automatic movements: Rolex Explorer I 36mm, and Omega Seamaster Pro midsize 36mm. I am actually having guilt feelings about leaving them in their boxes all the time, and not winding them. And I am not really into getting a winder for that reason, so I will likely end up selling them.
I am enjoying this Cartier Tank so much, that I may end up getting the same model in yellow gold in the future. Cartier puts quartz movements also in a number of higher end watches, and some of these are gorgeous pieces. I find that perfectly acceptable.
Cheers,
Carl

I still regret selling the black dial B1. Maybe the only watch selling regret I have. Quartz or not, an amazing watch.

Quartz has its place, I love my emergency. I couldn't get along with the M1 though, put it down to the ticking second hand in the end. That killed it for me.

I bought and then sold a watch purely because it was a quartz. I have nothing against quartz but for some reason I just don't think I could ever purchase a 'dress' watch that was a quartz. Funny that. I am about to pick up a G-Shock though so clearly it depends on function for me.

Each to their own though of course.

I don't mind quartz watches at all, and I often wear Luminoxes and G-Shocks for physical activities, but there is probably an upper limit to what I would be prepared to spend on one. I'm just not entirely sure where that limit is for me.

I've been tempted a few times by the Airwolf Raven, but at that price range I am in two minds. If I ever become (say) a helicopter pilot, that would be all the justificiation I need.

I'd go a step further and say digital is your best option for those activities, especially the gym and cycling. Lameness be damned - for my needs, analog just doesn't cut it for workouts.

Agreed, and to add to my earlier post, I haven't bought an analogue quartz for ages, and nor will I..... but I'm perfectly happy to rock a G-Shock down the gym, or the beach, or for any other rough activities.

Fair points Mr Stone and Mr Driver.

However, I seem to dislike digital displays more than I do the concept of quartz watches.

I realised this when I bought a very clever Tissot T-Touch Racing and sold it within a month. I was constantly having to justify the watch to myself by saying that it was my "Gadget lovers" watch. In the end the arguement held no strength with me.

Funny, when people talk about quartz watches, I just assume they mean analog quartz. I know that digital watches use quartz movements (if they can even be called movements, since they're solid state), but it seems if we're referring to digital watches, we call them digital watches, not quartz watches. So, I knew what you meant.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I see digital watches as being exempt from the quartz "stigma" that affects analog quartz watches. They're purely practical, and while some people use them as a main watch, I think a lot of watch enthusiasts (myself included) recognize the usefulness of a digital watch in situations where analog is either less practical, or actually useless. For instance, as I said in another thread, I use a Timex Ironman with a heart rate monitor when doing cardio exercise; that feature simply wouldn't exist in an analog watch. And while it would be possible to use an analog watch to time weightlifting set breaks at the gym, I find a countdown timer on a digital watch, which beeps at the end of the break and automatically resets, to be much more useful. The easy readability of the digital display is also a plus in those situations, imo.

Then again, you've got people like Ricardo who just won't see the light. :poke:

I have a beautiful ESA 555.411 quartz movement with 5 jewels and I love it. I'm wearing it now.
