Hi guys, the family is thinking of getting my father a watch for his upcoming 75th. He's a fanatic for crystal backs, loves the intricate details of the movements. He has a few Panerais, a Rolex, and a JLC. We will be pooling about 20K for his present and I would truly appreciate some opinions on what we should be considering.

No brainer for me, Glashutte Senator Chronometer. With discount you can be right around $20k and it has a gorgeous movement if he likes manual wind.

You can also look at any of the following all of which has beautiful movements visable through the displayback.

AP Royal Oak 15300 or 15400
    IWC 5001
    Zenith El Primero
Glashutte - just about every Glashutte has a beautifully finished movement and I especially love the Panomatic Lunar XL.

These will all cost you less than $20k except for the Chronometer.

Another nice one! Meeting up with a couple of my siblings in an hour so will discuss the options provided thus far. Most of the options have very elegant, uncluttered, classy dials...definitely my father's taste!

How about one with a nice back...and an even nicer front?

Breguet La Tradition. Its kind of small though, but its crazy nice.

If you can find a Lange in that price range then that's a great choice, otherwise GO offers tremendous refinement on their movements. PP is another amazingly finished movement, but I think that you are only going to get solid casebacks at that price.

Gents, thank you for the wonderful suggestions. It's down to the Zenith El Primero and IWC 5001, couldn't get anyone to agree to the Glashutte line. Out of the two I'm leaning towards the Zenith El Primero, very pretty movement! Thank you again!

I believe the IWC 5001 has the largest automatic movement ever built and it has a 7 day power reserve. I regret selling mine and I WILL have another one soon.
