I would forego documents except if the piece were a certified chronometer.
Provenance could be important here, so having a running certificate, or
Breitling's generic COSC paper may prove vital in verifying authenticity,
& for possible future liquidation. Altho, with photoshop, & other formats, it's
easy to forge paperwork of all sorts, so watch out for low flying imposters.

Breitling instructs one to send in their watch for service with the "warranty booklet" which I have done when my watch is no longer covered by warranty and when they send the watch back they stamp the back of the booklet in the service history section. So if one did not have the papers and sent their watch in for service, it still would be serviced and the only "added benefit" i just getting the stamp? I was under the impression you needed to send in the watch with the papers under warranty or not for service... I guess I was misinformed.

For a modest sum you can get a COSC certificate from Breitling at any time. They keep records.

You will still get a service, and a receipt for the service - just as good as a stamp in a book - in fact better as it usually details the work done (although that varies somewhat from country to country).

Personally, I would not spend the kind of money Breitling demands without the complete box and papers. But that's just me.

Breitling isn't demanding anything, and they're not involved in the sale of an out-of-warranty used watch. Lack of papers gives the potential buyer a lever to try to get the price down, and get a watch for a lower price. Many buyers are happier with an affordable price.

To the OP: check recent ebay sales, for an idea of prices. If the watch has been for sale for a while, try to use that for leverage, too.

I guess I mean I would not spend that kind of money on a watch without box and papers. Just my opinion. I'm no expert in fakes nor do I claim to be. Unless you are dealing with a vintage piece, I see no reason to throw away the box. I actually love the Breitling Box. If I could spot fakes like you guys maybe it would be a different story, but not going to save a few hundred dollars or even a thousand and risk it. Again, just my opinion. There is a market for everything.

I love my watches like I love my dog (who has papers lol)
but if he didn't I would still love him just as much.
(except watches don't get a boot in the ass for biting the kids)

That'd be me, I can't find what the hell I did with my Blackbird set. Got them for every other watch, has me stumped and I've searched everywhere. Not overly fussed though, if I sell it.

Imo papers are only important to those that don't plan on keeping their watches. If the price is right I could care less about the papers.

I assume that every watch will be sold eventually, if not by me, then by the executor of my estate. So even if a watch is out of warranty, papers would be nice. 10%? That sounds a bit high.

If I want a particular watch model bad enough AND the price is acceptable, I'll buy it with or without papers.
After all I would look a bit silly with a warranty booklet strapped to my wrist ;-)
There is always the question of what is acceptable and how much should I pay for a watch with or without the papers or should I say no and wait for one to come up with the papers even though the one without the papers looks stunning.
I guess that depends on the fever I'm running at the time.

It is easier to sell a watch with the papers. It gives the buyer a feeling that the watch is not a fake. But as others have said if you don't plan to sell it is a good way to get the watch cheaper.

Note that Breitling can sell you some of the papers (like COSC certificate) but I had to send the watch to them (BUK) for proof.
