The description of the Colt states that it has an 8 year battery.

You're right, the Colt does have an 8 year life - I overlooked that one. But the Colt is unique in the Breitling range (I think) with that battery life. All the others are either 2 to 3, or 3 to 4 years.... according to the Chronolog.

I like to think of watches like cars - you have German engineering and reliability but (some say!) a lack of soul at one end, with something like Alfa Romeo at the other - passion, soul, but potentially lower reliability. It's the same for watches. (Bizarrely while I prefer the Alfa Romeo's of the watch world, my actual car is a BMW!!)

I love this comment and agree but go the other way. I own a Bling Quartz but drive an Alfa Romeo! :D

I think you were extremely unlucky. My future wife bought me a Blackbird 2 weeks ago and it is absolutely stunning, and seems to keep pretty accurate time. I hope you go ahead with the purchase and that you enjoy your Blackbird for many years to come.
Best of luck!

The thing to remember, and it is why I like the mechanical watches, is the 'engine' is the soul of the watch. And you answered the reliability part of the question to a degree by mentioning the 40 year old rolex that is still running - which is undoubtedly a mechanical watch. have confidence that the Blackbird will serve you well.

Thanks again for all the helpful comments. The deed is done. The Blackbird is on my wrist. I would be delighted to have a new Aerospace also, but there was only one watch on my budget, and in the end, I really wanted a mechanical watch. I'm afraid I misled Driver 8 into classifying me as an "ultimate reliability" person who would likely be happier with quartz. Yes, reliability is important, but to me there's something special about a mechanical instrument that is built to deliver precision and long-term reliability -- even if a battery can provide more certain short-term reliability and probably greater precision. Moreover, as hinted in my earlier post, I greatly value freedom from the need to replace batteries. Perhaps my Blackbird will need service within the next four years or so, but it's an almost dead certainty that the battery on a new Aerospace would have to be changed in that time period. Again, not knocking the Aerospace (or any other quartz watch); my old one was great, and I'd love to have another one -- but not this time. Once more, thanks!

Glad you got what you wanted!!

You'll find a lot of people on here who can relate to the special feeling of having a mechanical marvel on your wrist.

Congratulations stowebird! I want a Blackbird too, just can't justify it at the moment...

Glad it all worked out for you. (And you've made the right choice IMHO! )
