"Recoding" an unsold watch as pre-owned just because it hasn't sold?? Sounds like complete nonsense to me. The AD is playing games there.

I agree with the others. The main reason to buy from an AD, instead of from a reputable grey market firm like Authenticwatches or PrestigeTime, is to benefit from the warranty and paperwork. If the AD isn't providing that, then it's a no-brainer IMO to buy from the cheapest source.

Look at it this way - if you buy from this AD and something goes wrong with the watch, you'll have to pick up the bill with Breitling to fix it. If you buy from a reputable grey marker dealer (of which, generally speaking, AuthenticWatches is one), and something goes wrong with the watch, you'll have to pick up the bill with Breitling to fix it. Difference? Nothing...... except for the few thousand saved on the original purchase price!

Whenever you deal with a gray market firm, just assume you have no warranty, because 9 times out of 10 the "warranty" provided by them isn't worth a thing. Sure some may have decent watchmakers on site, but others most certainly won't. I wouldn't want some random guy in a warehouse messing about with my watch, so I'd always assume no warranty and just send it directly to Breitling. Just make sure whatever watch you buy comes with the serial number intact and you're good.

Am I missing something here?
The way I understand the OP, he is getting a discounted quote from an AD on a new watch with no Breitling warranty papers.
Is this even a legitimate practice as far as Breitling is concerned?

Quoted from the original post:

That being said I was calling around and found the one I want from a chain store AD but here is the kicker. They are willing to do it for 7850 with the croc strap w/deployment (retail is something like 12,500). Anyway they said that because it was in inventory for so long breitling makes them recode it to preowned and I don't get a breitling warranty or papers.

Serious issues here.

Apart from the fact that the price is lousy (ADs were discounting 50% 2 years ago to try and shift them) it is a breach of the AD contract with Breitling to either sell preowned as new or to sell new without paperwork. If it's Tourneau then presumably you are in the US so contact BUSA and they should be able to tell you which ADs still have the watch in stock.

thanks everyone for your replies. I called breitling and they did a search. out of those still carrying them no one is willing to do less than 30% despite the comments on here of them just dumping them for over 50%. the breitling rep also said that they don't understand why they are giving me the run around because they can jut order new papers and a box for it if it's still new and they don't have them. other than online this is the lowest I've seen And if the watch does need an overhaul which I believe costs like 800 I'm only saving a few hundred which piece of mind knowing its legit with factory warranty is worth. if anyone knows of an AD that maybe i missed that still has one with a black dial and leather deployment let me know.

They are quoting you 30% because of their Breitling contract that precludes them from excessive discounts. If you were in the store with a wad of cash rather than a voice on the phone (who could be a secret shopper from Breitling) you would get a different answer.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. called the store and told them I talked to Breitling and they said that you can reorder the box and paperwork for it. They told me that they bought it at special pricing so they could not sell it officially as "new" with paperwork...long story short I told them they can keep it. After literally calling every AD on the Breitling website I found a store that would honor the 7850 price and I'm even getting it on a bracelet. Comes with box, papers and full Breitling warranty. Is it the lowest possible price no...but I think I'm getting a good deal on it and the piece of mind knowing that its legit and covered under Breitling makes me sleep better at night. I can't wait to add her to my collection.

Oh man, busted!

Just my opinion, but it sounds like that "big chain" AD bought up some inventory from another AD, perhaps one dumping inventory. IF, and just speculating, but IF that happened there is a good chance it violates their contract with BUSA, they know it, and that's why no paperwork. IF............that's some sleezy sounding stuff, because it "sounds" like a Breitling AD dabbling as a gray market dealer. But I'm sure there is a good explanation.

Definitely the right move. Enjoy.

I guess it's too late but notice Authenticwatches is really blowing these out, 65% off certain ones. about 10-12 different variations.

thanks for the heads up. saw that but I don't really feel comfortable spending that much for anything online from someone getting them from an unknown source. rather spend a little more and know I'm getting exactly what I'm paying for.
