That's not normal at all. Sounds potentially like a crossed thread. One for Breitling to fix.

Maybe a silly question but are you pushing it in whilst screwing the crown. It does needs pressure applying for it to lock.

Depends on whether it's a knackered crown (fairly cheap) or a knackered tube (more expensive). I believe the tube is part of the case on the Aeromarine models (as opposed to being a separate piece on some of the more expensive models) which means you may need a new middle case - so that would also require a full service by Breitling. If it's just the thread on the crown then that can be replaced quite cheaply so provided Breitling don't insist on a full service there as well, it'll be much less.

Best bet is to call Breitling direct and ask for a ball-park quote. they won;t be able to give you a fully accurate quote without seeing it, but they should be able to give you a best and worst case scenario view.

A new middle case - we are talking big bucks here for a crown tube replacement.

Problem is that the Aeromarine range doesn't have a crown tube, it's integral to the machining of the middle case so the whole piece needs replacing.

i had this problem on my seawolf ti you can have the stem shortened so it sits against the case if the thread is completely knackered, i took it to a local guy who serviced it and did the crown work for around £80 he was an old guy who worked for omega so was happy to let him loose on it, the price from breitling was around £650 (the dreaded middle case), the watch was only worth £850-£1000, its a no brainer!!!
