I think that particular religious war may be more fierce than anything in the watch industry.

Do you really want to go down that hole?

Lol.

I mean I get that a watch is more of an emotional item / status symbol than the tool we regard it as...

But a camera really is a tool... No religion to be had there. Canon has some stellar lenses, Nikon's got some to match them... It really comes down to what color you like the ring on them to be. For me, it's red. Is there anything about that that'll make the world spin backwards... I guess not.

I'm not religious about it, and it appears that you're not either, but I know from spending time on some of the photography forums that there's a lot of religion to be had there. It's almost as much fun as debating whether the calibre 01 is the world's best chronograph movement. :poke:

One non-debatable Nikon advantage is that they've been using the same lens mount since forever. So you can mount a 50 year old lens on your D4 if you want to. Opens up a great variety of quality vintage glass. To each his own

As for me, I chose the D700 a few years ago because it was the low-light king and I was shooting architectural interiors for a book.

Didn't direct it at you, more at the, as you say, quite vigorous wars being fought elsewhere... Crazy stuff...

The Nikon D700 is still one of my all time favorite cameras. I've used that a lot, that is, I never quite liked the old lenses. Yes, it does work, but it's a bit clunky...

Day to day I use a 1D from Canon and I find that to be a magnificent camera for me... I'm also pretty much at home in the canon lens park, where I've found all I need in modern, weather sealed and USM powered primes... Just what my use on the racetrack requests...

But indeed, it is a very personal choice and you can never quite go wrong, at least with the major brands.

fanboy fights in the photography forums are a lot bloodier than our "best movement" wars.

have been using Canon for decades, but the D800 almost forced me to try a Nikon alternative,
now if Nikon would finally ship that body I have been waiting for, I will be happy to add my comments
how they compare ......

I'm not really into vintage lenses either. I have one, a 105mm prime, that is super sharp and can be had for a song but otherwise I have all modern lenses. But some guys collect vintage glass the way Fred collects vintage watches.

As you say, you can't go wrong in either camp at the moment. A decade ago I think Canon had a clear advantage but Nikon has come out with some good cameras in that time and I think the field is more level now.

I can see why you went with Canon -- my impression is that frame rates tend to be better and if you're shooting at the track you need that. I've never paid much attention to that side of things since I shoot mostly architecture and landscapes, neither of which should move much.

And I didn't think you were directing anything at me -- I just enjoy a good discussion and haven't talked cameras in a while.

Fred - glad you joined the conversation. So you're waiting on a D800? Obscene pixel count. I'm curious how they increased the number of pixels so dramatically without sacrificing low-light quality (or so they claim). They always said that the huge photo sites on the D700 sensor contributed to it's fantastic low light capabilities but there are no huge photo sites on a 25MP sensor.

David, the D800 does have some unique innovations, that "force" me over, primarily the possibility for tethering over USB 3.0 and burst modes of 6fpcs in combination with that - apparently - ultrafast focussing. nothing you would need or use for everyday photography, but potential "enablers" for some of our projects, for "casual" use I will defintely stay with my trusted old gear.

To be honest, the frame rate is not even what I like best about my Canons. What really does it for me is the handling which seems to work just like my brain expects it to. I never really came to think about what was where, unlike on the D700 which never quite made its way into my intuition... Just how my brain seems to be wired.

Great photos! I like the beveled edge around the date window, nice attention to detail there. What type of macro lens is that?

Thanks. The lens is a Nikkor PC 85 f2.8. The "PC" is for "perspective correcting," tilt and shift functions that allow for some useful effects.
