The manual to my Colt Quartz II advises a 'regular service every two years' and a 'complete overhaul' every five years. What happens at a regular service, and does it entail going off to BUK?

I was surprised to read this as it seems to me to make the 8-year battery life pointless: the batteries cost peanuts compared to any service, so I can't see what the advantage of a stated 8-year battery life is when - if you obey the recommended schedule - the watch will have had four services (inc one overhaul) in that time.

I'm not looking for a moment to cut corners and will do whatever's necessary to keep the watch tip-top, but do SQ owners really typically have their watches serviced every two years? If so, since mine is a 2010 watch, mine is due its first already...

My Seiko Kinetic has not been opened since the day I bought it 10 years ago and working like a charm to this day.
My Colt Automatic has had its first service 10 years after I bought it new and that is only after it stopped working after I dropped it.
Having said that, two years is a fairly good frequency if you want to have some assurance of it's water resistance as the .rubber gaskets do break down.n

Thanks wessa. It won't be going near (or to be precise under) water to be honest. One of the reasons I preferred the Colt over the Chrono was the battery life of 8 yrs as opposed to 2/3, but that's rendered a bit meaningless if it's getting serviced every 2 anyways.

If it's running fine then ignore the 2 year service.

If you go diving regularly, especially in salt water then it's worth getting the gaskets checked / changed, otherwise the basic 'oil change' is unnecessary these days.
