If I'm following this right, an in-house manual is in fact the perfect movement for the 50th Anniversary Scott Carpenter. For at least that part of the Special Edition, Breitling seems to be doing it exactly right.

I agree that it does sound like a simple specialty niche movement. However, 70 hours isn't that bad for a manual.

It's not that great for an in house movement either though.

If/when this creation fails...

Given that it's a limited edition, they're obviously not expecting huge sales anyway. And it's unlikely Breitling intends to put this into more mainstream models, especially if Driver8 is right in thinking the 02 is just an 01 with the auto mechanism removed.

As long as it has a display back this could be the newest edition of the manual wind lemania that is so sought after. Might be a classic in my opinion

I believe it has a solid caseback with a reference to Scott Carpenter on it.

Well that just seems silly! One of, IMO, one of the most sought after Lings is the Lemania LE Cossie. Still probably a nice piece but probably way overpriced

I agree. Manuals can be much more attractive and interesting to look at than automatics. Given how rare they are in Breitlings, it seems a shame to cover this one up.

I just pre-ordered a Navitimer Cosmonaute AB021012 with the caliber 02 movement. Manual as rumored with 70 hours power reserve.
They'll only release 1962 of them (50 years since Scot Carpenter's Aurora mission in 1962)

When will that watch be released? Also, do you have more info?

I don't have to much info on the watch - Was told by my AD I should be able to collect July/August. 24 May would be an Ideal launch date??? (since that was the Aurora 7 mission launch date).

Yip, the Aurora 7 mission emblem will be engraved on the back. Will be released with black and silver dial only

A simple full calender version would be a nice addition, wether hand-winding or automatic. And so the beautiful Datoras of the '40-s and '50-s could be re-produced and the modern Montbrillant Datora could be replaced by an in-house movement with Tri-Compax sub-dial pattern. And I'd love a Chronomat 41 with this classy calender module - would be surely among the very first customers... :)
BTW there was a rumour from a trusted source that Basel 2012 will show us a calender B01 but finally it did not :( maybe later this year of 2013...
Best,
Robert

I'm just wondering (simply because I know little about watch movements) The caliber 02 in the Cosmo will be 24 hours. If they use it in other models (normal 12 hours) will it still be a calibre 02, or do they label it different because of the 12-hour gearing?

I think it is a pure decision question: after the B01 there appeared the B04 (GMT), and we are expecting now the B02... that could be as well - say - B01/24, B01-24, B01B, etc. etc. there is e. g. the Valjoux 7750 - has anyone ever seen all the previous 7749? :) me thinks function is that counts and not the nomenclature. My USD .02 only...
