At the risk of copping a pounding, i actually do think there's an ethical dilemma with spending as much money as we do on watches. So many of the world's people live in utter poverty and we could use that money to alleviate their suffering. It's not that buying watches is wrong (far from it!), but i think each of us needs to figure out for ourselves how we enjoy the good things we've got without becoming cold hearted and self absorbed. Just my 2 cents.

I can understand your concerns but you know I think in the end if your giving back something in life be it money, time, energy, faith, hope, love it all balances out in the end. I think if one were to only ever buy things for ones self or only ever think about oneself then there are problems but look at what you do for a living, you give of your mind, body and spirit to help people have some peace in their lives in a troubled world, I don't think there is a more valuable gift to give humanity. In that context a watch is really worthless in comparison, no matter how expensive! I work in a field that helps people as well and i often think those of us who do can be extra hard on ourselves for allowing some luxury in our lives. I think someone like yourself is more deserving of something nice than someone who goes out and simply is good at accruing money for a living!

Haha I was thinking the same thing! I read over it then was like... wait what did I just read?! Then I noticed your location and then it made perfect sense.

I say buy what you want assuming you aren't excessively stretching yourself financially to afford it. You (presumably) work hard for what you have so if you can swing it, you deserve to treat yourself once in a while.

I have the same problem. I really enjoy luxury timepieces and after owning several Breitling and Omegas, the mid-tier brands just lack something in the fit, finish, quality, etc. department that leaves me a bit disappointed even if they are fantastic values. At the same time I have a hard time justifying a $3K+ watch and I don't like my watch getting attention in my circles (I buy them for my personal enjoyment). But my gf told me something great the other weekend, she said, "Stop complaining about how much it costs, you work hard for your money and what you have and you deserve it. I mean you're so cheap with everything else and you don't buy me anything, so just be happy and enjoy it." I smiled and nodded.

This is America.....buy whatever damn watch you want and express yourself!
Teach these stupid kids that the government won't take care of them, but hard work....effort.....will.
F the PC police at your school, and ask your "lady friend" how much her purse or shoes cost and if she uses the same restraint......

I'm currently a student, a bicycle mechanic and have just been awarded a new career working in the railway. I've got a Super Avenger..why.. because I've wanted a ling for about 10 years now.. tool a while to get.. but I love it. I obviously won't wear it to work.. DURING work.. as it would get damaged.. but I'll sport it everywhere else. It'd be no different if you were to sport a more subtler omega or rollie.. THe kids wouldn't be able to spot that from across the classroom either.. and considering you said JUNIOR school, they probably wouldn't know what it is unless it was a G-shock or Toy Watch.. Get whatever watch makes you happy.

Two questions that you can only ask yourself:
1. Do you like it?
2. Is it within your reasonable means?
If the answers to both are "YES" than the answers to your question are:
1. Get it.
2. Get it.
.
.
.
n. Get it.

I don't know if it she honestly believes it is so much of an issue with the students...as it may be with the faculty and parents (parent teacher conferences, etc.). Regardless it doesn't really matter...I wear an Omega Planet Ocean now (that I must depart with in order to acquire the SA) and though the Omega is more of an "under the radar" watch compared to the SA nobody has even acknowledged that I wear it. I appreciate all the opinions expressed both ways...great people on this board.

If parents and faculty are judging your performance in educating students based on the watch that you wear then they are the ones with issues, not you.

I run a business and openly wear a number of different watches. If people ask I will tell them what brand and model they are and neither play it down or talk it up. If people want to judge the prices I charge for my company services based on that then so be it - I get more than enough business from the customers who recognize the value that I deliver.

In your situation if a parent wants to judge you on your watch then you can't stop them, the ultimate measure of your success won't be known for another 30 - 40 years!

if you have an issue, when someone asks, just say it was a gift. Who can have an issue with that!
Although personally, i don't much care what people think; I paid for it from my earnings, my decision.

1. The odds of someone knowing what it is are maybe 1 in 1000.

2. Even if someone asks, the chances they know what Breitling is or means is 1 in a thousand.

3. If someone ever asks how much a watch costs, even a friend, my response is always "I really don't discuss that." Simple, no lies involved, and tends to make the other guy feel he is sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. And he is!

I didn't realize a Super Avenger was such a status symbol, and maybe I should have kept mine because anything that implies status tends to be well out of my price range! :D
