My first ling, a CSO is now a year old and I am looking for the next. My favorite model is actually the Aerospace but not sure I can bring myself to spend so much on a quartz watch. Anyone want to talk me into it or give me reasons to get another automatic instead? I know I should go for what i like but the quartz thing just bugs me.

I wouldn't spend so much money on a quartz watch, but that's just me maybe. The heart and soul of your watch is the movement. The rest is just bling.

ive mostly lost interest in quartz watches but, i do think breitling super quartz models are rather novel. having a COSC certified quartz is pretty neat considering how much higher the COSC standards are for quartz.

Just a few points.

1) If you are bugged by quartz, you probably won't be happy with it.

2) You wrote that the Aerospace is your favorite model but that you are bugged by quartz. What is it about the Aerospace you like?

3) Thousands of dollars is really more than anybody needs to spend on any watch - auto or quartz. Breitlings have ETA based auto movements. You can get Swiss Made Hamilton and Swiss Army watches for less than $500 with ETA auto movements. Some Seikos can be had with in-house auto movements for around $100. I think even Fossil is making watches with auto movements now. Automatic does not equal expensive or exclusive. My watch-maker has told me I'm wasting my money buying Breitling because they are way over-priced for the movements that power them.

4) Breitling quartz are extremely accurate thermocompensated quartz. They are not powered by run of the mill quartz movements.

5) I personally relish the durability, reliability, and accuracy of quartz watches. I don't have to worry about resetting them. I don't have to worry about rattling their innards. On many models, I don't need to worry about changing the date between 9pm and 3am.

6) The Aerospace, for me, is the ultimate in functionality. Chronograph. 2nd time zone. Back light. Timer. Alarm. Day. Date. Timer bezel. Extremely thin and lightweight. Accurate within 15 seconds per year. No automatic in production can match the Aerospace's functionality.

7) My only problem with quartz watches is that darn ticking second hand. Luckily, Breitling didn't include a second hand on the Aerospace or Emergency. Problem solved.

FLX - Your AD sounds like he's not really promoting his brand. Quite a way to maintain business.

Of course, for just showing time Breitling (and any other brand selling for more than $10) is probably highly overpriced. However, I feel I pay for so much more than just showing the time when I buy a Breitling. And sure, part of it is the fact it's a luxury item. A greater part is that I like the design and the craftmanship needed.

No, this wasn't an AD, it was my watch-maker. He's independent. He repairs watches, but he doesn't sell them. He prefers in-house movements: Rolex, AP, Patek, etc. He says he likes Hamilton more than Breitling because you get more bang for your buck - both use ETA (which he considers "crude"), but Hamilton is a lot less expensive. These are his opinions, not mine. I was only making the point that one shouldn't shy away from Breitling's quartz line on the basis that quartz watches can be had for a lot less when the same goes for watches with auto movements.

The Aerospace was my first Breitling.

I've had it about 4 years and still love it. I will always have it!

It and the Emergency were the watches which attracted me to Breitling in the first place. As far as I'm concerned there's nothing like an Aerospace - it's so identifiable and unmistakeable.

Lightweight, dressy (I have TT), accurate, slim, crisp looking, comfortable - I could go on.

If you get one just be sure it's what you want. That, of course, goes for any watch.

Hey jmiliz,

My first Breitling was an Aerospace - it's what attracted me to the brand in the first place, and I still love it. I know the innards are not as complex as an automatic but the exterior work is the same, high quality you expect of a Breitling.

If it really is your favourite model, then BUY IT.

I'm the same as Breitling bloke and Swiftnick,
My first watch was an Aerospace 10 years ago and i still love it to bits. A lot more use when travelling abroad with the different time zones, if you really like it just go for it. Why not buy a used one then, if you don't get on with it you won't lose too much in depreciation when you sell it. Steve

I see. I read watch-maker but understood it as AD - shouldn't have done that... I guess you're right with the quartz analogy, there's always less expensive alternatives.

Athough I like the look and functionality of some of the Breitling Quartz watches I cant see myself buying one regardless of price. Dont get me wrong its not a matter of not believing its worth it, its just a matter of personal preference. Especially when you consider most people believe its insane to pay the price we do for our watches.

The only quartz watch that I currently own is a Polar Heart Rate Monitor that is use solely for that purpose, once my training session is finished its replaced with one of my automatics

I thoroughly admire the technology behind Breitling's Super Quartz, and I have no problem with my wife's cockpit lady being SQ powered.

I can't see myself buying one because I'm not a bigfan of digital displays and the ticking seconds would drive me crazy.

I chose quartz over automatic. I was sick to death with my last auto (a Tag) endless resetting and winding.

Granted I am at the bottom of the ladder with my Colt but I LOVE the quartz, its reliability and durability.
