I went on a hunt today for the Omega Planet Ocean LiquidMetal Limited Edition watch that was released a few years ago and since completely sold out at Omega. I decided to call a few boutiques and a bunch of ADs to see if they happened to have one laying around that went unsold. Here is some background about the watch before I share the AD responses.

It was only produced in a black dial with a ceramic liquidmetal bezel; it was the first liquidmetal bezel that Omega released, it only comes in 42mm and it was limited to 1948 pieces. Here are some of the responses that I got from Omega Boutiques and ADs (including a dealership who is very well known here)

-Omega just released their first liquidmetal watch last year; there was never one produced prior.

-What color dial and bezel would you like and I will special order it from Omega (oh really?)

-Omega has never made a Limited Edition Planet Ocean

-What size would you like, 42mm or 45mm, it's available in both (REALLY?)

-Liquidmetal is a brand new technology, it was never on a watch prior to the new Titanium Version.

-What's liquidmetal?

-Are you sure it's a Planet Ocean and not a Speedmaster (WHAT??????)

-Can I have your contact informationa and I will let you know as soon as Omega releases more.

-Try looking online or call Little Switzerland in the Caribbean.

-You should look at the new Liquidmetal with blue dial (thanks Jack@$$ but I have it already)

The only place I've been *impressed* by an AD was at an Omega boutique in Chicago. They seemed to know their stuff and were happy to share information freely and with only a few screw-ups... We had a pretty in depth discussion about the merits of the Speedmasters' hestilite and sapphire flavors. The salesperson I was with also got a nice little dig in about my Cockpit saying something to the effect of "We also make the ETA movement that you'll find in your Breitling" While not strictly true, her comment was insiteful and biting.

On the whole, the others places I've been either don't engage me at all (the silent treatment) or appear to be making it up as they go. I had a Rolex dealer tell me some incredibly bizarre things about their watches.

Try giving the tourneau in King of Prussia mall in PA a call (610) 491-8801. They had just about every PO under the sun when I was there in December/January. The salesman helping me knew his $hit and I am pretty sure they had one at the time, because the LM looked great in person IIRC.

My answer: YES. I can't believe you got those answers from boutiques, who are supposed to know their stuff. I went to the Omega boutique in San Diego the first week it opened. When I told them I had a X-33 they looked at me like I had a cyclops eye. I don't expect them to know what a X-33 is, but a liquid metal?? C'mon, man!! Even I know when that one came out. I hate it when an AD is clueless about the watches they sell. I like it when they know far more than I and correct me when I'm wrong! :poke:

They knew exactly what watch I was referring to even before I finished my question. They haven't seen one in years. That's ok though, I found one.

Once, just once, I went to one of the local Ben Bridge mall shops. I was looking in the Tag case to pass time since it was their top brand on hand (I KNOW, right). The salesperson asked if there was one I wanted and I replied not really. She then said, "Tag has recently passed Rolex in quality you know." I smiled (maybe) and went on my way. In retrospect, the poor thing likely was given NO training other than how to ring up a sale.

There are some amazing AD's and there are some , well lets not speak ill of those poor bumbling fools . The best AD I have been to was a Patek ,Rolex ,IWC dealer in Vancouver BC ,The sales lady was extremely knowledgeable about the brands they have and the ones they don't have . And the brands they don't carry she knew as much as I did if not more . The impressive thing was she never said anything bad about any brand. I feel she is one of the most professional sales people in her field. I have been collecting for 36 years and have travelled to over 65 countries and many thousands of watch stores along the way .

I've gone to several different mall shops to see if they had a TAG 1887 chronograph in. Except for the one that actually did have it, none of them had even heard of the thing. Reactions varied from a deer-in-the-headlights mixture of confusion and fear, to consternation and furrowed brows. And yeah, for most of these places, it was their top brand as well.

In most Omega ADs, I usually end up telling them a thing or two, although one time I came a cropper. The salesperson tried to tell me the 3313 was in-house because in the catalog it doesn't have an asterisk next to it indicating it's an ETA-based movement. I wish to hell I'd remembered at the time it was Piguet-based. Instead, I just stood there as befuddled as she was, knowing full well it wasn't in-house, but unable to explain why.

The Tourneau store in Vegas is horrible. I finally convinced the wife to get a watch and she decided she liked the Ladys Datejust with Diamond and MOP dial. (I know right)...So when we go there I immediately went to the Breitling case because I wanted to show here those before we made the decision. The saleslady came up and started helping us. I asked her to see the ladys Breitling with and auto movement she said they dont make them. I explained that I saw them online she says they only make quartz, then she says two things that set me off she said A. was does it matted if its a quartz for women it is more about the fashion(This is after I explained to my wife told the lady she only likes mechanicals or autos) then she says why are you looking at a Breitling they are equivalent to....are you ready for this.....an invicta..... I had my Seawolf on....I didnt even know what to say.....The story just got worse from there as the woman treated my like dirt.

Although the Patek salesman was very nice and extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all watches.

Thanks I have been trying to convince here of that one even took her to the AD in one of the hotels. She thinks its to big she likes the date just because it is smaller.
