OK, I'm looking to join the club. I am a watch collector, but this will be my first "big" purchase (upwards of $750). I have narrowed it down to a few options and they are all relatively inexpensive dive watches. I have a budget of roughly $1500 but I'd prefer to spend as little as possible. This will hopefully be the first of many to come. I am hoping for a Navitimer for my graduation present in 2014 (yeah, I'm a planner), but as of now, which would you go with, or something completely different? Let me know what would be the best value and thank you in advance.

Here are the options:

1. Superocean Professional (asking $1000)



2. Colt GMT (asking $1300)



3. Avenger Seawolf (asking $1500) I can't get the actual picture to upload but it is a yellow dial with rubber strap

All three are very nice watches and a breitling is a breitling. To me there are no low end breitlings and high end breitlings. With the three you have listed I would go with the Avenger seawolf.

I heard that the superocean has some "threads" in its crown that are easily broken or ripped. In general, which will be most durable, which is the best value, and finally, which looks best in your eyes?

A watch should be an emotional purchase, not a logical one. Buy the watch that you love, not the one that makes the most sense. Search the threads here and you will find one or two people who have had problems with virtually every model, but you'll find far more who love them and have never had issues.

The issue with stripped screw down threads is particular to titanium cases, and again most people have no issues.

I don't have the type of money to make a watch can be an emotional purchase but are you saying that only the seawolf has the crown threads (given that it is the only titanium one)? Because in a B.S. review for the superocean, he mentioned the threads in the crown. Also, do the movements differ very much? I am pretty sure they are all automatic, but is one of the movements preferred in this community for some reason?

All of the watches with a screw down crown have threads, all 3 of these pieces do.

There is nothing peculiar about the SO threads.

All three are fine watches. The Seawolf is substantially larger. The SO pictured appears to be the oldest of the three.

All three watches have similar movments (the Seawolf and SO are identical movements) with the only difference being a GMT complication on the Colt.

A deciding factor may be size with the Colt at 41mm, SO at 42mm, and Seawolf at 45mm.

Were it me, I would want my first Breitling to have a bracelet and the Pro II over the Pro I bracelet. That would leave the Colt GMT as the only option.

As others have said, keep hitting the sales threads unless you are set on one of these three and get the one that you like the best.

I don't want to get all deep and meaningful, but.....

A Breitling is not a logical purchase, you don't need to spend any more than $10 on a watch, and you don't need a watch at all. There is no practical reason for buying any luxury watch.

I recently purchased my first Breitling and it is exactly as you state Roff. I have had many Seiko's Raymond Wiel and no name watches over the years. I have always craved the looks of a Breitling and settled on a Chronomat Evolution with a white face and numbers rather than strikes. I did this purely because when I saw it. The watch said to me buy me....... I like the aesthetics as well as the reliability. I have since purchased a blue calf strap and a black calf strap to change up the looks once in a while.
I do also crave a Blackbird with big date complication, but for the same reason.....It just appeals to me.
A fantastic watch on your wrist just makes you feel good on a daily basis. If things aren't going so well I just look down and it makes me feel better. (priceless)

Whatever you decide make your decision from the heart, and how the watch makes you feel.

I was not looking for a watch....I had just purchased my Rolex GMT less than 3 months
when I saw the two-tone Cockpit. I saw it in the AM....Thought about it all day, went back in PM.
They still had it ...I got it!!! I thought "BOY am I stupid!!"

Go with what you like best. No one can tell you otherwise. Your taste is your taste, My personal choice, I'd go with the GMT because I like the Pro II over the Pro I, and think bracelets are a little classier than rubber, (but rubber has it's purpose). My next ling I want to add to the collection is the SOP you have listed first (other than a Navitimer when I can afford one of those). Go by heart.. not what everyone else tells you you should get.

Well yeah, that would seem to be the unanimous consensus.
