So if I walk into a dealer today and purchase a new Avenger Skyland, I need to send it off to Breitling to be serviced within two years of ownership?

Not necessarily.

The likely service period is 5 - 7 years, so if it's a Skyland then 2 years could easily get you in that window, but not guaranteed. 2 years is actually a nice service window though because that's the warranty period. Close to the 2 years, if the manufacture date indicates that the watch was made 5 years ago then I would definitely take it back for a service under warranty.

nice thread, what if you don't use the watch very often since its bought, say only use it for 10 days in a month, then it still needs a service after 5-7 years?
if the watch is not used often then the mechanical components inside are not moving, then there isn't much wear & tear? am i correct?

Thanks..

As I said, service intervals are driven by the breakdown of the oil and that has nothing to do with usage. In fact, a watch that isn't used at all is likely to need servicing sooner if anything because there is more likelihood of the oil migrating from where it is needed.

Thanks for the info Roff, so for people who don't use their mechanical watches often a winder is recommended?

Thanks..

That's a bit of a leap.

Giving it a full wind once a month will be enough to keep the oils where they should be.

hmmn, what if the watch is not used for around 10-15 days, then is a full wind recommended? or just setting the time & date will be enough?

Thanks..

As I said, a full wind once a month is enough. If you are going to wear the watch every couple of weeks then that's more than once a month so no issue.
