very nice, cruvon. though there is a Valjoux 72C/730 watch a little "closer to home" with quite beautiful gilded movements.

often listed as "Wakmann Breitling" or "Wakmann Breitling Gigandet", actually produced by Charles Gigandet
and sold in the US under the Gigandet, Wakmann and Vulcain brands.

quite nice, but in a completely different price range

Looks beautiful Fred, did hear of the Gigandet triple but didn't see one in the flesh:). Btw why is it called the v72c/730 i.e why the appended 730 (to represent the gilt movement?) and which year from?

I dont believe in comparing Rolex w/ Breitling prices. Even though they used the same movement for the triple calendar watches they have a lot different collector base .

Rolex has been the same company since the beginning. They have a much wider collector base w/ better documented watches and the collectors have a much longer 'tradition' of collecting the vintage pieces of the brand and a large amount of verified documentation and books to study from and create demand.

I am not saying that the Breitling pieces we collect and try to collect are not valuable or desirable but its a completely different category and certainly the 'mystique' is not there (yet) . We have all seen an increased interest in Breitling vintage watches but unless some sort of demand , tradition and mystique is created and verifiable documentation is published in print we will never see prices anywhere close to the Rolex prices . And lets hope it stays that way as I could certainly not afford $75K to $105K for a Breitling Datora

same movement as explained in another thread, developing over the years from 1916, two-pusher 1938 to the mid 1970s.
started life as the Valjoux VZHC, the 72C had 18000 A/h, the last version, the 730, has 21600 A/h

horology off.

Thanks Fred, thought the 730 was a variant under the v72C movement but as you explained that's a different movement altogether.

Did you really see watches with triple marking Wakmann + Breitling + Gigandet? I saw Wakmann only, or Wakmann+Breitling, or Wakmann+Gigandet, but never Breitling+Gigandet or Wakmann+Breitling+Gigandet .

no Phil, this is a misunderstanding.

The watch was manufactured by Charles Gigandet, marketed by Wakmann in the US, using Gigandet, Wakmann and Vulcain branding.

sellers (ebay and otherwise) have decided to call the watch "Wakmann Breitling Datora" or sometimes "Wakmann Breitling Gigandet Datora" in their listings to add value, though it was never afaik really manufactured with the Breitling brand, though there is a thread here in the forum where a member believed his Gigandet was authentically branded Breitling.

Have never seen one beyond doubt marked Breitling or Wakmann/Breitling, seen no advertsing or sales material for it. It imho is NOT a Breitling and NOT a Datora, as this was a Breitling trademark.

Thanks Fred. Btw can one look at a 730 and v72c movement and physically tell the difference like how we can between the v72c and the equivalent Venus movement? What's the cue to look for if so?

cruvon, we are leading this slightly astray again; if u look south below the balance wheel (the projectile/bullet thingy) both the Rolexes and the Gigandet are marked 72C and 730 respectively; though I have seen 23c/72c movement without that mark, those were marked on the dial side, tough to find of us non-watchmakers.

there might be gurus who can tell the two apart w/o the marking, I can not and frankly have not tried yet.

To the best of my knowledge the only physical difference between 72c and 730 is the rate which makes it virtually impossible to tell the difference visually unless you can see the movement stamp on the baseplate.
