The Money you spend on a watch is relative to your income or the depth of your commitment to collecting such fragile forms or art . I ordered a Mondrilliant Datora in red gold with a red gold band last weekend that will be a welcome addition to my collection which now sits at 142 and counting . By the way most people have no idea what your watch is worth and the ones that do are not likely to want to Knuckle you in the melon for it .

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in suffering the pains and hesitancy that occurs when crossing these changing lines in the sand. Like most, I can remember a time that 1k was my self imposed line in the sand, but that line has changed a number of times and has been creeping ever higher as I become more educated, aware, and acquire pieces that I feel will enhance/compliment my collection.

I am also more of a buy and hold type collector vs a trader and having a diverse selection to choose from is also something I enjoy. Although compared to some of you folks, my collection of 19 at present seems rather meager.

Within the past couple of months I've been fortunate to have made a number of acquisitions which I have lusted after for quite some time. It has taken my collection to a higher level in terms of pedigree brands, expanded my "Dress" watch section, as well as markedly increased the value of the collection. All of which were goals I initially set out to obtain with this particular expansion phase.

The next step will take me into a new and uncharted realm where 15-20k will become the new benchmark since I'm considering an AP ROO and they fall well over my current self imposed 10k line in the sand. This has me feeling a bit uneasy and hesitant at the moment, but I also remember this has occurred with each passing of the old benchmarks.

I think it's the natural order of things as one becomes more educated in this hobby, that his/her tastes become more refined and the desire for new "Pinnacle" pieces follows suit. Of course with this growth comes a trade off in the number of pieces one can acquire in the course of a year, since the financial means to fund ever increasing higher end pieces for most of us is limited.

At any rate it's a wonderful hobby that gives me a lot of pleasure and self satisfaction with the addition of each new piece, but it also allows me the opportunity to meet and associate with some great folks with like interests.

In 1969 a Rolex GMT was only $250.00USD....What will a $10,000.00 watch be in 40 years?

Of the 12 Breitlings i have owned, the most i have ever paid is 3, 600 (US). I have bought all of my watches second hand. It means i've never had the thrill of walking out of the AD with a brand new watch. But it's also brought Breitlings to within my orbit (I'm a church minister; not huge salary there but lots of job satisfaction :) ).

My budget has crept up over time but i buy all of my watches by putting aside the coins in my pocket at the end of each day. So going higher in price has just made my purchases less frequent. It's been good for teaching me patience. Waiting two to three years for a watch really makes you decide whether you want it! It's also taught me the lessons of not envying others their buying power.

I think my emotional limit is probably around $5000.
