I can see where it might be hard to keep quiet when someone proudly displays his new "Breitling". I'd feel he has a right to know that it's not, but depending on the situation and our relationship, would have to decide if it's my place, or if it's advisable, to tell him. There's always the possibility of some resentment, even if it doesn't quite rise to the level of "kill the messenger", and that's a consideration. There's also the possibility he could find out elsewhere and come back with "why didn't you tell me".

As to his wearing it after being told it's not authentic, there's no rule that says he has to care. It's still a watch, and usable as long as it works. Wearing it doesn't make him a liar; continuing to tell folks it's a Breitling is something else again. I can even imagine someone continuing to wear it as a lesson in humility. I would't be judgmental -- we never know all the facts.

For two years, I've been listening to a bunch of Freudian/Jungian/Horologist fusion crap and keeping mostly quiet about it. (2 years on Monday in fact).

1. We are properly and understandably outraged by those who try to achieve financial gain from fake watches. Fine, I agree.

2. But this whole "he's a phoney" or "he is insecure" or "wearing a fake watch is a sign of general lack of trustworthiness" or any other nonsense about the internal psychology of any person who knowingly wears a fake watch is pure speculative bulls##t! It is an overbroad generalization. It lacks the slightest foundational expertise. It implies we can read minds or, deeper yet, the subconscious of another person.

Really, this is just soooooooo STOOOOOOOPID!

Clearly those who think they can determine another's character defects as a result of something so ridiculously insignificant to 99% of the population as a bloody watch, MUST have deep seated issues arising out of breast feeding or potty training. You know how I know? Because I said so and saying so is fact, right? RIGHT????

Ask me how I really feel. (no smilies)

Roff is continuing to show a sense of humor, very refreshing to see. But I gotta agree with Tom, how can you really know that someone who wears a fake watch is a fake person or a poser? Maybe they just don't appreciate horology like we all do but still wants to feel like he owns a nice watch. Who cares as long as he doesn't try to pass it off as real and scam someone out of their money. And to add more fuel to the fire, wearing a homeage is just as stoopid as wearing a fake watch. People who wear a homeage may be even stoooopider than people who wear a fake watch. Yea, that's directed to all your Steinhart lovers and Pam Homeage fruitscakes.

Edit - I spent most of the day yesterday in a Duabert hearing. Empirical evidence and all that.

The Daubert technicalities were probably interesting, but only to us.

If you knew someone who had been given, wore or purchased a fake watch.Would you tell them?
I did.
I feel if they knowingly wear a fake watch....They are fake too!
Goes for shoes,handbags,etc...etc.. :popo:

the salesman at CSL had a fake super Avenger on, i did not have the heart to mention it after he explained an Ex colleague sold it to him for £1.200 pounds  although it could have been a cover story.

I've made some bad calls re character judgement over the years, involving being pleasantly surprised and crushingly disappointed. It's never spun on a watch however, real or otherwise...its normally the wearing of a Carlsberg T shirt, ownership of a Range Rover or tattoos of a Rottweiler.

But those are perfectly reasonable criteria.

With forearms like that I would have kept a bunch of watches I loved except for the size deal.

I don't own any homages myself, but I still totally disagree with the above statement.

But as always, each to their own opinions.......
