I've been to both cities, and as everyone has stated, you should be fine. If you're "spidey senses" start tingling, avoid bad areas and situations.

London and Paris are both very affluent cities. Although the B'ling is a beautiful and pricey watch, there are people around with way more expensive watches and women sporting $5k bags on every street corner.

If you are that worried, hotel safe should be fine. I never had a problem with either of those cities.

I've lost count of the number of times I've visited London and have been to Paris many times and never had the slightest problem.

In fact, the only place in the world I've ever been mugged was in New York City.

I would be remiss if I didn't note that this thread brings to mind a fantasy of mine - sitting at a Cafe on the Left Bank with the Navi 01 on my wrist while sharing a French roast with a petite, but feisty Parisian brunette spouting Sartre with bohemian contempt …. and pouty lips.

But who hasn’t had that fantasy?

When I read this I thought to myself "why do I have a feeling Pigalle is right below Montmartre," because I found myself walking through some sh!thole looking for a cab a few months ago. Just googled it, and of course, Pigalle it was.

Sharkman your right I had that very same fantasy except in mine shes a redhead Ah man thats my wife , its all good !!

And RJRJRJ then you know what I mean While Montmarte is gentrified and somewhat "sanitized" these days, the neighboring areas are certainly not. Barbes-Rochechouart to the east can be a little rough at night, so don't go wandering there alone with your camera and guidebooks at night.

I visit Paris at least 3 times a year and have often put my coral Emergency + coral UTC on my wrist or my bi-color Rolex and never had any kind of trouble whatsoever. Off course you should stay in the non-ghetto areas because once you leave those... hell I wouldn't even wear an IceWatch in those banlieues.

I'd like to add that I'm not tall (5'7", 168cm), and wear glasses :geek: , does it make me an easier hunt for the thieves, or am I getting paranoid here?

Yes, you're getting paranoid. :D

OK, I'm feeling better and less afraid to enjoy the trip with the watch I like! :-o
It's not good to travel without a watch, feeling kinda naked...

I really appreciate all your replies, thank you very much!

I have visited London on many occasions Julks and it all boils down to common sense. Like me, wear your 'Ling but if you feel that a location makes you feel 'uncomfortable' then cover it up - you could take a lightweight top with sleeves in your rucksack/bag for this purpose.
I would imagine you will be mostly visiting the tourist locations which are mostly in the centre of London - you should be fine here as there are many other tourists (all with expensive cameras, watches etc :) ). I would certainly cover up if I was going on the Underground - that's a cert'. If you are going off the 'beaten track' ie out of the centre of London and into the suburbs - you would just have to see what the area was like and make a decision based on that.
Regarding safes - the ones in the suite are normally sufficient and secure enough (I have often left my watch in them) but if you wanted to be extra secure, then the hotel safe would be the better option but I would make sure that you get a signature for it AND make sure that you have a photo of your watch (just in case).
Finally, it doesn't matter if you are 4' tall or 7' and nor does it matter if you wear glasses or not - if you are 'targeted' then the criminals will take you on regardless (that applies anywhere in the world) and you would have been extremely unlucky. I hope this helps Julks.

I'm impressed with the kindness of all the members on this forum!
Your impressions about the security level of London is very helpful, thanks!

I have many subject-to-ban fantasies about Paris.

But where/what is "Left Bank"? :?:

My sister lives in south London, and when I visit, i generally use caution. I don't flash watches about esp. when travelling or out shopping etc., but in restaurants and bars etc you'll be ok.
Just use common sense. Even though it'll be summer, try to wear a long sleeved shirt if possible. Muggings in London can happen at anytime of the day. The latest trend is "huggings": where a group of people try to befriend you outside a bar etc. and while hugging you and wishing you well, someone else takes your watch, phone, wallet.....
I sound paranoid, but I do notice certain youths eyeing my watch wherever I am.

My ex-boss was in Paris on a stag weekend last month. He got mugged. They took his new Carrera and wallet.

On a side note, I loved the feeling of safety in Japan. All the nights out we had and I never saw one incident of crime. I wore a TAG at the time and nobody except AD's looked at it. :)

Thank you for the "huggings" tip!

I was checking out at a local Costco and had my SA on the wrist. The clerk says "Wow, you have an Invicta!" I just smiled and proceeded out the door. Some people just can't be educated.
