There are watches for less than a thousand that will tell time and look impressive enough for the average person. Personally, I wanted a watch that made a statement. I wanted a watch that people would notice and that represented that I had reached a certain level of financial freedom giving me the ability to buy an expensive watch. I could have bought pretty much any watch I wanted but I bought a Breitling because it has that WOW factor. My Code Yellow doesn't fit up under my dress shirt sleeve and therefore is very prominent when I'm in a meeting at work. My Navitimer, with all the sub dials and slide rule bezel just demands attention wherever it goes. I like the attention and I would feel slighted if my watch failed to impress because it was too small.

I freely admit my delight at making an impression wherever I go wearing either of my Breitlings. If you are spending thousands of dollars on a watch, you must want people to notice it. Don't you??? Don't buy a puny watch to save a buck, you'll just end up selling it to get the watch you REALLY wanted in the first place. IMHO

Whilst I respect your personal take on owning a watch, theres a flip side. I personally like the attention from others with a similar interest and opportunity in watch collecting, but sat in an office full of hard working but lesser paid junior staff who can only dream of owning a Breitling, even if they had heard of the marque, I don't make a show of mine. I even admit to a feeling of self-conciousness when I'm wearing mine sometimes...especially when I'm aware of some depressingly low Christmas bonuses handed out the day before I'm buying my fourth.
The diplomatic message we can give out to anyone buying a watch is to be true to yourself and your own personal taste. Unless of course you don't know what that is exactly, in which case dont buy a girly watch :)

I feel more like Ewen, and agree with the others to buy based on utility and personal taste. I don't care if others notice what I'm wearing, unless it generates geek talk about functions, etc., which can interest me. I don't want to deal with people being impressed, or thinking that I'm someone who wishes to impress, so I can relate to the potential self-consciousness as well.

Not really. I'm with Ewen and Wrangler on this. First and foremost, I buy a watch because I like the watch itself. I do take into account how noticeable the watch is, but in the opposite way from you; if it's too noticeable, that's a reason not to get it. I don't mind if people get a glimpse of my watch and appreciate it, but I certainly don't want the watch announcing itself and letting everybody know I'm trying to impress them. But then, I also don't like to wear colognes that can be smelled from across the room, so consider the source.

Totally agree. You should buy an item, and more specifically a watch, because it appeals to you first. What anybody else on this planet thinks is totally irrelevant.

Strictly speaking of the office environment, thirty years ago I WAS that "lesser paid junior staff". I quite often noticed the houses, cars, watches, suits, etc. that the corporate officers owned and I aspired to reach that same level of success. Those were some of the most encouraging incentives for me to stick with it and succeed. I think that certain material gains provide an subtle incentive to those younger employees to stay the course and achieve milestones in their careers. If the junior staff doesn't see something to keep them interested in persevering against the odds they will give up and move on to "greener pastures". In todays business climate employees have no loyalty and do not think staying with a company till retirement is a valid career path. They are constantly looking elsewhere for a bigger salary. I just lost one of my favorite employees to another firm offering a bigger salary right NOW. I was really hoping that that employee would stick around for the mandatory "time in grade" requirements my company insists on applying. I had plans to promote him to a managerial position. Anything I or my own staff can do to entice them to stay is well worth the effort. I believe your image CAN be a powerful tool to inspire others to success.

Is there a chance your former favorite employee felt like he was busting his ass so you could afford your Lings, got sick of it, and left? I don't say that to be snide. I don't know your company or how it does business, but that is a common concern among new law firm hires - the more longstanding and better-paid partners a firm has (including retired partners), the more new associates it needs to keep billing insane amounts of hours just to keep those high salaries and pensions going, a lot like Social Security. In some larger firms, there is a sense among a lot of new hires that they missed out on the best period to work their way up in that firm, and will never actually get theirs when the time comes. It feeds a lot of resentment and disloyalty.

I bought my first ROLEX GMT in 1969 , I was a helicopter pilot in "Nam". I bought it because it was the Best watch I could
find...I bought my second GMT again because it is the finest watch I could find....I bought my NEW COCKPIT because I REALLLLY
LIKE it! IMO....You should buy ONLY WHAT YOU LIKE!! If what YOU like is impressive to others...OK but be true to you.
IMHO

Go for what you like. If the 41 suits your needs then go for that. If yuo ask 20 different people their opinion on this, you will get 20 different opinions. That is just the way it is.

FYI - I opted for a 44 for my 6.75" wrist.

I want to thank you all for your input. It seems as though this debate could be endless. However the consensus seems to be to pick the right watch out that I like. Personally I do like the 41mm. I do plan on taking my gf and getting her opinion as well. I have been looking at Breitling for quite sometime and now I'm ecstatic about making this purchase. I agree with you all, Breitling is not just any ordinary watch. It's a watch that reflects a certain level, whether it being an accomplishment or a milestone in life. I am confident that fellow watch connoisseurs will admire the beauty this magnificent timepiece has to offer.
