Hello guyz!

Made up my mind last night to purchase An Avenger Skyland and also purchase it from my local AD which is an Aberdeen. The problem I have today is I have phoned both dealers in Aberdeen and also a couple in Glasgow namely Goldsmiths, Finnies, Ernest Jones and Watches of Switzerland. They all tell me that they will not discuss prices over the phone and that I would have to come into the store, this is all very well but even after telling them about the predicament I am in Living on an Island in the north of Scotland, it would cost me £250 to get to Aberdeen alone, more to get to Glasgow they are still unwilling to help. So I could pay the money, travel to Aberdeen find out when I get there that their discount is crap and leave thinking that it all had been pointless and I would have been better of taking a chance on buying on the internet!

Can anyone see my point or have any good ideas as to what would be the next best move.

I'm sure there are several AD's that would be happy to accomidate you over the phone by explaining your situation. From what I hear, you guys across the pond don't get much of a discount. Try contacting an AD stateside or another AD within reach and have them overnight you a watch! You'll save a ton of money.

I'm not to sure whats involved with buying from across the pond, I know it is a lot cheaper but i'm not sure how customs works and how much I may get charged on import duty. I'm not looking to buy on the cheap but I want to be able to get the best deal I possibly can without being ripped off. I got a reply from the dealer at Finnies in Aberdeen about an hour ago, he was the store manager, I told my plight and he said he understood, he went on to tell me the RRP for the skyland that I want was £2750 and that he would sell to me for £2400 which still seems a bit steep. I'm actually quite dissapointed today because I was ready to do the deal but I just think it's to steep. I could pay the £2400 but I still feel I'm being ripped of considering prices on the net which are stated on this site both UK and USA sites.

You have to find an AD who will ship internationally - I know mine will, but don't know what kind of discount he would give you. You should then be able to buy tax exempt in the source country, but you will be liable to VAT in the UK on importation.

There will likely also be import duty, no idea what the UK duty will be right now, but I'm sure the doctor, Driver 8, etc can assist with that.

Remember also that North American prices are usually quoted exclusive of taxes so what you see is what you pay, no further discount for excluding the domestic taxes.

I recently paid £185 tax/duty on a declared value of £950. That should give you an idea of what to expect.

If you budget for around an extra 20% or so on the purchase price for VAT, customs duty, import tax, handling charges, duty on the tax, tax on the tax, duty on the VAT, VAT on the duty, tax on the handling, handling of the VAT, etc, etc ( ) then you'll be in the right ball park.

As you know VAT in the UK is 17.5%, then I think you need to stick on around 3% for other assorted taxes.....

Amazingly though, the strong pound STILL makes it worthwhile.

I would recommend buying locally from a shop. Its a little more expencive, but you get warranty and service easier.

I was about to buy online - but decided the price differnece was worth the safety issues.

Info for anyone who wants to know!!!

I phoned customs yesterday about importing a watch here's what they said:

Take the price of your watch including your sellers delivery charge then add £1 then add 17.5% VAT. Thats what you have to pay to see your watch on your wrist from the States or Canada.

Thats pretty good. If you can find one of our ADs that will give you 30%, you end up saving some serious dough.

I spoke to an AD in Canada today and they offered me $4000 canadian dollars including delivery which they said would be around $150 when I worked that out plus the 17.5% VAT in Britain the actual price I would have to pay would be $4700 or £2355. This means I'm better of going to my local AD so I wouldn't save anything buying from the States cos thats the same price as my AD offered!

Try an AD in the US. Our dollar is almost equal to the Canadian, but our retail prices are much lower.

I didn't realise that i'll give it a go!
