As I was making my way through the chaos that is Mexico City, I ended up in the district of Polanco where the Antara shopping center is located, and visited the Breitling AD. To my amazement, the best deal he could give me on a Navi World was $7,800.

It is surprising how the tax on imported goods work from Country to Country. I was thinking that I could travel to Bermuda or Barbados, buy my watch there, have an amazing week-end, and still end up in an improved financial position, even after the flight/hotel dues are covered.

Where do people buy their Breitlings from? I bought a Navitimer for $3,500USD in Istanbul, and a World in Montreal for $4,800CAD. Is there such a thing as retailor loyalty or do people travel to tax-free zones to acquire their timepieces?

Just wondering.

Sounds like youre comparing some old pricing to the current prices. Retails prices have gone up significantly over the past couple of years.

As for where people buy... depends on where they live. Here in the US, there are a lot of dealers that are willing to give you a rock bottom price, a few of which are forum sponsors.

Don't confuse 'tax free' with 'tax evasive'. If, as an Ontarian, I buy a watch in an area without sales tax, or where as a visitor I can reclaim sales tax, then legally I am still obligated to pay import duty and Ontario HST when I return home. Most jurisdictions are the same.

Not doing so is evading taxes.

Good point. Similarly, in the U.S., some states have a "use tax" levied at the sales tax rate, to cover out-of-state purchases made by residents.

But lets face it, just about every adult American is a tax evader because of this stupid law. Ive never heard of anybody paying it.

I have, but then one of the things I work with is taxes. In general, though, as you say, it's rare.

Yeah, right, that's theory. Would be interesting to see the actual percentage of those who actually do.

When I went to Jamaica and they wanted to sell me a watch at an AD without taxes is that tax free or tax evasion?

It's tax free in Jamaica, but as soon as you bring the watch back to the US you are liable for any US import duty and local sales taxes.

I believe that would be any applicable use tax, based on your state of residence. I think that there are some states that don't levy this tax.
