This is a pretty interesting thread. I would have thought more people would sway the other way on this.
Although, I don't have as much experience with timepieces as some of the other gents here, I would say that most of the stuff I have seen over the years has only increased in price. The Chrono Evo almost doubled in retail price in 5 years.
I don't know a lot of annuities/funds that give you that kind of ROI. If you plan to wear it, your're obviously not going to see HUGE gains and should expect depreciation, but I think you will get a good amount back. BUT, if there is 40-50% residual, and you have gotten decent wear out of it, then doesn't that count as a pretty safe investment? I dunno, just playing devil's advocate.

On the other hand, you were a very smart man buying all those gold coins! Look at the price of Gold today!

My plane is at a small local airport in Tahlequah Ok. Its about 12 miles from my house. I didnt have a problem with the Medical...if you seen me walking down the road you would never know I was disabled. Thats the bad part of being in Desert Storm, Somalia and Bosnia.....lots of hidden scars unfortunately. But, nothing like what these soldiers are having to deal with coming home now.

I started collecting coins at a young age, I would always get a silver morgan dollar from my grandmother since I was 1yr old. When I was a teenager I would walk down the side of the road and pick up pop bottles to take them to the grocery store to turn in for cash..I would buy some bubble gum and I would ask for a silver dollars if they had some. When I was 16 I started working at the grocery store I took them pop bottles too and I would get my pay check and I would usually buy 1 silver dollar or 2. When I was 18 and gradustaed school I joined the US Army, when I would see silver dollars I would trade a dollar for them, or buy them from people that had them..I woudl take about 20.00 out of my pay check a month and buy silver dollars. So I have gathers alot of silver and silver dollars since I started collecting at a young age. Now, when I get paid from the VA every 2 weeks, I go to a local shop, and buy 4 silver dollars every 2 weeks.. I also buy alot of silver coins and silver dollars off craigslist. Alot of people areound here know I will buy coins and they usually come to me..when people are hurting for money, they know I will buy guns, coins and whatever is of value...so, I have bought almost 35 guns in the past 4 months...people are really hurting now days.

As far as the gold coins, I have always wanted one...after I bought 1, I had to have another...every where I go I am always on the lookout for them...I also do alot of metal detecting, and I have found 1 gold $2.5 gold coin, about 12 silver dollars, Lots of mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, wheat pennies, silver halves...gold rings, silver rings, gold and silver necklaces. People would be suprised at how much money you can find with a good metal detector.

Anyways, sorry, I got off subject I suppose..The Breitling watch I got the other day that doesnt work, I am taking to Moodys Jewlery tommorrow in Tulsa to see if they can fix it..if not, I will have it sent off to Breitling to have them fix it if they can....I honestly dont have any money in this watch, but after its fixed, I may just have a nice watch for everyday wear.

Well, I guess my interpretation of 90% disabled is a bit different then.

I understand. There are Vets working for the VA and for other jobs that are 100% disabled. Now, if I was Permanently and Totally disabled, then I wouldnt be able to work...or I wouldnt have stood a chance on passing the Medical.. Vets that are Perm and Total are really jacked up in 1 way or another unfortunately. :(

I haven't been there, but I've been close; RVS several times, MLC & ADH a couple. It's great to be able to share aviation with a son. I know I certainly enjoy sharing it with students.

+1. Disability in all of its forms is not nice but I must admit that 90% meant to me that this guy could only move his head and mouth or something like that - I was shocked when I saw the photo of him standing by his light aircraft.

Absolutely wonderful that you can share flying with your son. My dad got me into flying. His first plane was in the early '60's, a 1946 Aeronca Champ which I think he paid $1,500 for along with two friends. From there he had a couple of Cessna 150s and a couple of 172s before the local airport closed. Hopefully, one day, your sol will be telling others how his dad got him into flying.

I don't believe there is any investment potential in modern Breitlings purchased new. There is investment potential in vintage Breitlings if you choose which model to buy carefully. The only possible exception I see with modern Breitlings are the 18k pieces which can go up in value based upon the gold market or a killer deal where a very desirable purchase price is obtained. Vintage pieces have been steadily going up for the last ten years. I used to commonly get Navitimer 806's for $300 - $800 ten years ago and you rarily can find them for under $2k now. And, there are vintage Breitlings a lot rarer than a common 806.

Totally agree with you on this, Paul; there seems to be quite some potential in some of the vintage pieces, and I am talking about realistic resale values, not our Museum friend or new fads like Parks&Bond pushing vintage Breitlings at crazy prices http://www.parkandbond.com/products/search?q=breitling

But it does require a lot of patience, some know how, an expert forum and, of course, a good vintage watchmaker

I am not expecting skyrocketing prices and unrealistic yields, but it seems quite a safe investment & definitely more fun than holding german, japanese or US bonds yielding close to zilch.

Paul is correct about the vintage pieces. They will slowly increase in value as a function of availability. They become more rare with time because some are just trashed or sold for parts. They do reach a point where the price fluctuates based on the antiques market.

Right now, antique watches and clocks are near a low point in the cycle. However, it is nearly impossible to make a quick killing in the vintage and antique watch market. These cycles change slowly and holding an item for it to appreciate in value can take a long time. Most of my collection was purchased to enjoy and not as an investment.

My wine cellar has appreciated more than any other thing I own. I've seen gains of 400% to 500% on many items in my cellar that were purchased less than 10 years ago. Too bad I bought them to drink.

P.S. Nice plane! I fly a Cherokee.
