I don't think anybody has started on me for giving a playful if mildly supercilious answer to an obnoxious question before.

It's a slightly insulting question to ask anyway (assuming you've been posed the question by a stranger.) If asked by a friend, I'll know they're normally just yanking my chain and let it go.

People do seem to use watches as a genuine means to strike up conversation with random strangers though, but it's pretty easy to tell when this is the case and be a little more civil.

Nice one Flange - 'weight' is such a give away. So do you reckon that the fakers will start attaching bricks of lead to their 'masterpieces' ?

It's a tricky one I agree Bananatree - I've been asked by both stranger and friend/relative alike (stranger I said "yep - it's real", friends/relatives I've handed it to them and asked them to tell me which they think it is). I've not managed to get a punch in the mouth yet though Bananatree :uplaugh: .

Keep them coming guys - it's an interesting subject.

Weight is already very easily faked.

I'm afraid to say I have only been asked twice and my response was different both times.

To the guy in the shopping mall in Dubai " yeah its 100% genuine " :lingsrock:

To my wife " honestly, it's fake ok......!! "

Never been asked before but if I was somewhere or with someone I didn't want to get into a watch discussion with I think I'd say something like "the bloke in the pub assured me it was real and for £50 I certainly hope it is".

I've was asked in a hotel bar if my TAG was real. I asked her if 'hers' were real. She called me a pig for asking such a question. I thought it was a logical and appropriate response. Actually I made this up. But what a great comeback!!

Better yet. In that situation just say... I don't fake it, do you?

Yep, I have been asked that. I replied that it was. End of conversation.

I've done this as I usually buy Breitlings in multiples and tell her about the 1st one then sneak the 2nd one home a few days later and she asks if the 2nd one is real too so I say "yes, it is a real watch" which she takes as being a fake Breitling... but she got smart recently and said since it's a fake she'll wear it around, so then I have to confess.

Just yesterday at lunch I got asked if my Breitling was real (in a nice way), and after I said it was he got into a watch discussion, so in essence the way it was handled was merely so he didn't get into a major watch discussion which could be embarrassing to me afterwards if it turned out I knew nothing about authentic watches and/or actually was wearing a fake.

I've never been asked if mine is "real or fake?" but people, always men who also happen to be watch collectors, will offer a compliment as an opening line. They usually are wearing a luxury watch and a conversation ensues, the watches are handed over, examined, exclaimed upon, tried on, admired, etc. it is always very friendly, honest and enjoyable. Other times it might be someone who admires Lings from afar because they cannot afford one but dream...which one of us cannot relate to that?

I've never been asked if any of mine are real, but I have had 'nice watch, bet you wish you could have afforded a Rolex'.
Most comments however are congratulatory and informed.
