Hi Peoples,

Here's a 769 for your assessment. Be gentle with me, as this came into my possession before I became a member here.

I did say a few days ago that this was a very sad watch. Case finish is OK, but a gold is not really my thing. I have placed it on a Di Modell strap for the moment, which seems to suit it OK. The face is a mess and I don't think the hands are right either. No box or papers, so no provenance.

Runs beautifully though and is reasonably robust. If the case back can be believed, it's a 1951 model (#787903).

If you can spare a thought for a poor lad like me, I would be interested in your comments in this one.

Regards

Jim

Can we see movement and inside caseback shots? Makes it a lot easier to comment.

Hi Roff,

Thought you might ask that. Here's what’s inside.

And, there the case back from the inside as well.

I gratefully appreciate your comments and those of fellow Fora members.

Looks broadly OK. Gold plating has likely been redone as it's in good condition for the age and the colour doesn't look quite right. The movement looks OK, bridge may be a replacement, but I can live with that, it hasn't had anyone try to scrawl Breitling on it. 1951 is late for an unsigned bridge, but not impossible.

Hands are consistent with early 769 non luminous hands, but likely not original to this watch, crown is a replacement. I think that most of the 'sadness' as you describe it is cosmetic, a clean and a new crystal and it will look like a different watch.

Thank you Roff,

I appreciate your expert opinion on this one. It’s a comfort to have others look at, and give an opinion on a particular watch. It adds a new perspective to collecting, especially when its from such an authorative source.

I will post my O & W Aviator in the correct place for viewing, just as soon as I am able.

This is what being a forum member is all about IMHO. Expert review is very important to me and the comradeship one recieves in such a firendly setting is key to confident collecting.

Regards

Jim
