I have this Chronomat bi-color watch, model 81.950 which is believed
to be from around 1986.

I know the screws that are fixed on the side of the bezel including the tabs are not
real gold, mine are losing their plating.

I want to replace them.

I checked with my watchmaker and he said that the ones in the tabs are real screws
but the the ones between the tabs are not screw in but sort of pressed in.

Can anyone here confirm this?

Only the rider tab ones are real screws.

Is that model dependent ?
I have taken bezels off of Chronomats and you need to unscrew them all before the bezel comes off
and they were all screws

Hmmm.

I can't say that I have tried on all Chronomat variants, but I thought from memory that the 81950 was just a four screw setup. Maybe my memory is just failing me completely in my old age

I cant speak for the older models, but on the newer ones, all screws come out.

Yeah, definitely on the Evo. Don't have an older one to hand so can't check, but starting to doubt myself.

My friendly watchmaker emailed me and said he is going
to send me a couple.
So I'll find out soon, I'll keep you all posted here.

Hello guys,

my watchmaker did send me a bunch of screws, for free.
Yeah, I know, he is great.

Now I would like to know what is the best way to remove the screws, and then I mean
the ones that are not screw in.

I will also ask the watchmaker, I just want to learn as many options as possible how to go about this.
My watchmaker already advised me to use a little bit of Loctite when I push the replacements in.

They should all be real screws as they apply pressure to the spring clip that holds the bezel in place

Looking at the photo on my iPhone which isn't great and the heads do seem to protrude slightly which is odd

Ok, presuming that the non-rider screws are push in, I would suggest that the whole bezel is removed then if the push in screws are visible from inside, you push them out using a tool of some sort.

prob best left to a watchmaker to do it.

Otherwise if they are all proper screws, just remove them and the bezel easily lifts off.

In either case, if you are happy enough to attempt to unscrew the defective one yourself, what have you got to lose if it isnt threaded? Nothing!
