Ehhhh, I've seen worse. Not that I'd drop $40k on it, but I can kinda see the niche market for a super high end dive watch as something BP would be into with their history of dive watches. I'm not liking the multiple colors and fonts though, and yeah, that strap is horrendous.

:huh I'm really struggling with the massive hatred for this watch. Yep the price is daft and it's MASSIVE (although the lack of traditional lugs may make it wear a little smaller), but there's a lot of stuff going on it that case with the depth gauge, etc.

The traditional (and beautiful) Fifty Fathoms is still made so this isn't a replacement (which WOULD be a shame) - it's just something different and unique, which IMO isn't a bad thing. I can think of loads of watches that are far worse looking and have a fraction of the functionality.

But, as always, it's each to their own I guess!

I love the size and the functionality, hate the price, and undecided about all the colors until I can see one in the metal I guess.

Love it or loathe it, there's no arguing that it's packed full with some pretty amazing innovations. There's also a reason why the strap looks like it does -

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f74/blancp ... 02787.html

Apart from the price (and distinct possibility it would wear like a dustbin lid at a fraction over 55mm), the only thing I particularly dislike about it is the font of the 12, 3, 6 and 9....... but that's literally the only thing. Yeah I know, I'm in a minority of one here, but hey never mind! :D

I like it more after watching that video.

Did Blancpain hire a Breitling designer?

:uplaugh: I was thinking something along those lines. It just goes to show that Breitling isn't the only watch company whose taste is all in its ass.

No doubt an amazing and innovative watch but I have to agree that it is a little ugly. Considering a professional diver probably isn't going to care what it looks like, who cares about our opinions however I can't help but think there's nothing wrong with the design of the existing models.

I'm with Mr Driver on this one: I actually like it quite a lot. I do prefer the original and I am taking into context its intended audience, buyer and user.

Yes, it is overpriced and oversized but the aesthetics are spot on for a diving tool in my opinion.

Also, the technology is inpressive and fascinating.

Here is a first hand opinion of the watch:

This is not a new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The Fifty Fathoms continues to be produced.

The Blancpain X Fathoms is a totally new watch and I actually love it. I was in Dubai for the World Premiere and would dearly love to own this watch. It is large, however this is to aid legibility when scuba diving. This is probably the most complicated diving watch ever produced. The blue depth gauge can show the wearer their current depth, accurate to 30cm. Reflect on that again 30cm, you may be 10 metres under water and it is accurate to 30cm!

Blancpain are a favourite watch of mine. I own a Breitling and love them (I have owned several over the years), but Blancpain is produced to an exceptionally high standard. It is a fantastic exemplar of haute horology.

I think the aesthetic appearance is subjective, but I would dearly love this watch in my collection. It is a huge watch but that suits this 6ft 5 inch watch fanatic.

This is the first time I have logged onto this forum and I love it.

Just reading comments re the Blancpain X Fathoms.

Some people have mentioned the Fifty Fathoms, I must say this is a gorgeous watch especially in gold. I recently saw this watch with a prototype watch strap on a couple of Blancpain execs from USA. Whilst the leather may not be practical for diving it looks wonderfully warm and the pronounced stiching reminds me of former pilot watches of WW2.

A watch with a professional use has great merit and this is where I could partly accept the argument that Breitling and Blancpain have made watches which suit the pilot or diver accordingly.

My problem is I can never settle on one watch - I want many, much to the irritation of my wife.

I think the intention with this design was to clearly identify the different functions of the watch using color coding, but my goodness, they failed in the execution.

As a diver the last thing you need underwater is fancy colors and confusing dials. Underwater all colors lose their red tonality anyway, so color coding becomes pretty useless. Black and white is the way to go if it's functionality and clarity is what you're looking for in a diver's watch.

Nope, don't like it one bit, it looks like a mess. Innovative or not, surely they could have made it look better than that somehow?
