It's a step up from TAG for Tiger.

Not everyone likes Tiger but I'm sure the publicity will be good for Rolex.

Is this the reason for the latest price hike??

I really couldn't give two hoots who endorses whom. I get that it works for the brand but it really doesn't alter how I feel about a brand one way or another.

Rolex is probably a better match for Tiger than Tag was, but slightly surprised that one of the more conservative endorsers jumped on Tiger quite so quickly, although they seem to be making a big deal about the comeback aspects. I also suspect that it was a more affordable deal at the moment.

I would not call his behavior exactly cheating. He brings it to a new level / definition. I doubt he will ever achieve the same popularity after his unfolding. Perhaps I am wrong. Then again, I don't subscribe to the whole spokesman / celebrity stuff. It does not impress me for a celebrity to wear a watch (or anything else for that matter) that they did not purchase for themselves. On the contrary, I would be more impressed with John Travolta if he actually paid for the Breitlings that he wears.

Sorry for being the grammar wonk, but technically Tiger is endorsing Rolex, not the other way around. In the sense we're talking about, to endorse means "to recommend (a product) in an advertisement." (Oxford Dictionary online.) Rolex pays for the endorsement, but Tiger's the one doing the endorsing.

As for the deal, meh...I don't like celebrity endorsing anyway. It galls me to think that some of what I'm paying is used to line the products of already insanely rich celebrities. More often than not, I like a brand despite its endorsers, not because of them. The James Bond connection is an exception, but I wouldn't say I like Omegas because of the product placement; rather, I'm a Bond fan, so I'm naturally interested in the connection.

I agree with Roff that Rolex is a better match for Tiger than was TAG - TAG always seemed a little downmarket for an athlete of Tiger's caliber. For God's sake, the Tiger Woods Edition TAGs were quartz! Having said that, I think Tiger brings Rolex down a little bit. I don't really care about his adultery. I think it's his personality more than anything else - he's a totally cold fish who doesn't inspire warmth of feeling. If he had a more energizing personality, then I could get more excited for his comeback - I could see it being spun as the man who's down but isn't out, and who fights back against adversity. Instead, he just strikes me as cold, calculating, and utterly willing to sell his endorsement to the highest bidder. I know that's what endorsement deals are all about, but some endorsers do a better job of making me believe it's possible there's more to it than money. Tiger doesn't.

I equate him with rubber bezels.

This isn't exactly his first spin around the block with Rolex. One of his first endorsements once he turned pro was with Tudor, and in fact I tried on an old Tudor Tiger (his name in red on the dial) this past week. Great watch, essentially a Daytona with a date and a 7750 movement. They had disagreements at some point, so the story goes, so he ended up over at Tag. My guess is that had there not been a rough spot of some sort years ago with Tudor, he would have been a Rolex endorser many years ago.

I like tiger, I don't necessarily agree with his actions in his marriage but I can understand why he acted that way. Either way I think rolex is a good fit for him, just one more are where him and Phil can compete. Who has the nicest rolex?

Usually when a celebrity / sports star endorses a watch they speak about how the match matches their personality blah, blah, blah.

Given the way Tiger's personality comes across could we be looking at the return of the Oyster Quartz

I couldn't give a damn who endorses what, but obviously I understand why companies do it - to make the more impressionable buyer believe the success of the endorsing celeb will somehow rub off onto them just by wearing a watch.

One of the biggest culprits is Omega IMO. One look through their catalogue and it's like reading a copy of Hello magazine. Turn a page - George Clooney. Turn another - Nicole Kidman. Next page, Ian Thorpe (just about acceptable given he's a swimmer and endorses the PO). Next, Anna Kournikova, then Cindy Crawford, etc, etc, etc. Why? I can't stand the whole "random celebrity" thing : i.e. using them for no other reason than they're famous and recognisable, but have absolutely jack to do with the watches or what they stand for.

I actually think that Breitling get it right with their endorsements. Take John Travolta - instantly recognisable as a "big star", but ALSO a pilot and an all round aviation nut. Then there's Herbet Nitsch - not exactly a household name, but a professional free-diver and pilot, who's completely at the top of his game. If a brand really has to have celebrity endorsements, Breitling do it right IMO.
