I think the whole "colour co-ordination of shoes, belt and watch-strap" thing is much more of an American concern than anybody else.

I'm American, so that might have something to do with my differing perspective, although I think it has more to do with the fact I'm just really nitpicky - to the point of being compulsive - when it comes to coordinating my wardrobe. But I won't wear non-coordinated leather. Shoes, belt, and jacket (if leather) must all match; by extension, so too must the watch strap. For practical reasons I exempt by briefcase, carry bag and wallet from this requirement; besides which, I don't wear those items. (I'm sure some women would argue with me, and claim that they wouldn't leave the house without a coordinating purse, but whatever.) This is one of the major reasons I don't wear watches on straps. Unless it was a Cartier, or some other brand with a quick change system that would allow me to change straps on a whim, I would feel like the leather choice would make it wearable with only half my wardrobe.

Ultimately, I think you should do what you're comfortable with. Most people won't notice anyway. Only people like me will. Whether we're worth worrying about is up to you.

I totally agree with you, which is why I said at the end of my post -

No in all serious, and IMHO, just wear it with whatever you feel comfortable with. I know I certainly do.

I'm not being derrogatory about it at all : it's each to their own, and I dare say matching accessories look very smart. However, personally I've been known to happily wear a brown strapped watch with black shoes (and to the office no less) - in fact I did today now I think about it - and not given it a second's thought. I guess that means I'm either very easy-going, or very prone to making fashion/style faux pas...... (probably the latter! ), but if I'm comfortable with it, that's all that counts to me. :D

I'm not taking it that way. I was trying to make light of it, by calling myself compulsive, and suggesting the OP not worry about folks like me. In my case, it isn't really a choice. I couldn't be comfortable wearing non-coordinating clothes and accessories if I tried. I'd probably be happier if I could be more laid back about it and not care so much. Having said that, if the OP is asking what is proper, in an "according to Mr. Blackwell" sense, then coordinating is the way to go.
