I've read the original post a few times and I don't hear the OP endorsing fakes - I see a curiosity about the quality/work going into them, and if that's his/her intent, then I've wondered the same: why put so much into a fake? Some of them are crazy in terms of the work and $$ that goes into them. But they're still a worthless fake. It's one thing for someone to spend $10 in Chinatown on a cheap Folex. Sure, they've wasted $9.95 for a cheap thrill that will fool no one. BUT, to spend $300-500 on a fake? Just don't get it. Can't see the logic anywhere in that. I didn't realize those "expensive" fakes existed until I saw some of the YouTube vids posted, too, and I was blown away by the time and money being wasted going into them.

I think the thing is that some people are so desperate to appear successful by having the illusion of a particular watch, or the appearance of a certain brand name on their wrist (almost at any cost) that they're prepared to pay quite a lot of money for it. Yes $300 - $500 is a foolish amount to spend on a fake, but it's a darn sight less than $3,000 - $5,000 (or even $30,000 - $50,000 for some of the models that are faked) for the genuine watch. In these incredibly materialistic and consumerism driven times, image is sadly everything to some people. To some, a fake is better than nothing, and I find that incredibly sad.

Ultimately all these fakes (no matter what price they are sold for) are knocked together from sub-standard materials in sweatshop factories in the Far East for peanuts. There's zero quality control (obviously), no warranty (obviously again) and IMO it's one of the quickest ways to waste your money. If a fake lasts more than a couple of months without developing some kind of fault you're doing extremely well. Plus irrespective of how ALLEGEDLY accurate they are, you constantly run the gauntlet of someone noticing it's a fake and making you look like a prat!

But to me the most bizarre aspect of the fake watch sub-culture are the guys who buy fake watches and then spend literally thousands replacing fake parts with genuine parts! And they don't generally seem to do it to sell the watch on in order to rip people off : they do it in an attempt to own the "perfect fake". :huh I've seen guys on the net who have bought a fake SMP for example, and then swapped out the dial, the hand set, the bezel insert, even the movement in some cases, for genuine parts...... and spent thousands doing it. I've even seen some say they've spent almost as much building an "ultimate" fake as the cost of the genuine watch! :huh Absolutely crazy IMO, but hey, I guess it takes all sorts.

This was the aim of my post! I honestly didn't think/know they'd go to such extents to make fakes. When i think of replicas, i think of the ones on canal street not the ones that i saw on youTube.
