I have been collecting since I was 16 and I got a Tudor from my dad ,now 35 years later I like buying special pieces and unusual ones my collection goes from Timex to a Patek Philippe 5131 J 18K WORLD TIME CLOISONNE DIAL . And a great many Art Deco pieces from the 20's. I enjoy my Breitlings they are daily ware watches . But I also ware Grahams Rolex And Frederique Constant's great watches dress watches understated elegance and hand made.

Have had a watch since age 19, turn 40 next month, but only got interested in the better quality brands a few years ago. A few months back I got my 6.75 which I think will be the one for quite a while, but should I have the good fortune to step up a level it's certain pieces by AP and Hublot that catch my eye right now.

I'm 31 and prefer the older style Breitlings - Chronomat, Navi's SOC etc. Not a lot of the newer models grab me except for e.g. the TOC. For me age doesn't affect my choice or style of watches; I like what I like

I am 23, started with the navi 1461 below but since then my tastes have changed. Looking to get a pam 336 for work and still deciding on a weekend watch, maybe a breguet transatlantic. Kind of grew out of Breitling. PP 5146 is my next milestone watch, guess my taste is a bit mature for my age.

I hope not too much beacause I'm getting older.

Actually, I think age is part of it, but the rest is where you are and how long you are on your journey as a collector. I started out wanting "milestone" models. Growing up in the midwest pre-internet, Rolex was IT. First nice watch was my GMT, which I got talked into over a Sub. Then, got an Omega SMP. Basic, classics. About then, I found out about Breitling, and wanted a Navi. Then, I really started researching the world of horology that I never knew growing up. At about the same time, the market exploded, with chronos and varieties and makers of all sizes. I was in my "younger forties" then and still resisted a larger watch, thought it was less mature. Had to have different color dials, though. Discovered Breitling and wanted a Navitimer badly. I went though a variety of styles and types and then decided enough gimmicks, I wanted more basic. This could have been age, or maybe a natural progression as an enthusiast.

I have my 2003 Chronolog, and I remember looking at the Headwind in thereat the time and it doing nothing for me. Now, I own one and love it. The Steelfish didn't immediately register with me, but now I have owned one and want one again. I originally thought the rider tabs and screw heads on the bezel of the Chronomat were overly fussy, not clean enough. That's obviously changed. I at one time wanted a Yacht Master, and though I do get the new interest in Rolex, I'm reluctant to consider a second Rolex. Been there, doing that, and so have 20 million others. For years I thought 44mm was awfully big, but now my "sweet spot" for watches is 42-44mm. I'm okay with the new Superocean but miss the classic look of the Fish and the "non Buck Rogers" numbers that I enjoy on my Headwind. Is that age? Maybe, but I think its more likely the experience of 9 years of following, buying and selling watches and learning a few lessons along the way. Keeping those which I continued to love over time and selling those that seemed less enduring. With Breitling right now, I'm in "backfill" mode, looking at classics from the past 10 years that I never had. The Headwind is part of that, and I would like a black dial B1. At the same time, I love the new sapphire bezels. If the right design evolution or innovation is out there, I want it.

I have no idea what I'd want if I was 25 again and starting over with watches. Maybe a PO. But I think things other than age factor in more.

Great thread... I'm not sure how to respond. At 30, I'm betting I'm in the younger-to-middle-aged collectors and I can't really say age is a factor as much as station in life. I bought my first quality watch (Omega SMP) at 26. Classic, timeless... Since then I've purchased another Omega (PO), chase-durer, luminox, Breitling and a few vintage. My station in life has afforded me some opportunities, but that ties into the job as well... My profession (regardless of income) has allowed me to buy bigger chunkier models that will take a beating. Because of the job I've focused on those types instead of flashy or m

Sorry... Flashier or artistic pieces. If I were a lawyer or doctor or in the market, I'm sure my tastes would be different than they are now... So I'm not too sure age is really the key. I love watches for what they say about the person wearing them... It's not so much about telling time but a statement of individuality and personality. To me, a "suit" wearing a 48mm B&R would be as crazy as a soldier in combat gear wearing a Patek.

I don't think my taste has changed much with age, it's more or less what I like at that time.

At 29 I was a Breitling nut ,and at 32 I am a Rolex nut. Breitling has lost me in the last 2 years because of there designs. I kind of have feeling you will be jumping ship from Breitling in the very near future.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Mike... :poke:

Seriously, Mac has a good point... from a design perspective Breitling has fallen IMO... I prefer their old stuff within 5years or their shall I say "super old" vintage stuff, which is what I started off with anyways... from the current line I only fancy the Navi or SO series...

I am sure you will be jumping ship soon bud :nana: :nana: Breitling has seriously lost there mojo ,and is going after a younger crowd with there designs ,and I don't fancy any of them , Colored rubber bezels , color inserts, Is it too hard to make just a watch anymore without all the gimmicks?

It's not I've jumped ship per say, my tastes have broadened... :!: I used to be a vintage nut and all I would look at is vintage but my modest collection has been simplified with half so far from the late 80's to the early 90's and the other half hailing from the 60's... but I can tell you the more contemporary ones from my collection is 'ahem' cough cough another brand...

the only Breitlings I would buy as of right now are certain vintage pieces or ones that were released before a few years ago...

Well put! I see people in suits or a tux sporting chunky watches, and I just want to say "you're not James Bond". Being in the military, I have also seen people in Afghanistan wearing a Breitling, or a Tag. Totally not the time or place. But then again, when I'm deployed, I really miss my watches!

As I look at my collection, I see how my taste has evolved. I also see how my taste has gotten more expensive. I wouldnt even say expensive. Instead of buying several low priced modest pieces, I have really been concentrating on quality watches that hit several styles. I mainly stick to divers. I like a watch to be able to go everywhere I go, and I spend a lot of time in the water. People think I'm crazy wearing a Breitling while I'm kyaking. If I'm spending the money, you better believe I'll be wearing it! I don't buy watches to sit in a drawer. I think that's why I stay clear of more dressier watches. They are beautiful, and quality, but I rarely dress the part, and the dress watches I do have, are ones that I used to wear all the time years ago and never wear now.

Ive found it doesnt have so much to do with my age as it does with my constant boredom with what ive got. Every new pick up is the best yet, but eventually the new girl on the block shows up and I completely lose interest in my collection. I find myself obsessing over a piece that I didnt even know existed or had never considered owning just a day earlier. Im talking about watch collecting, by the way.

When I flew missions in Iraq I wore a G-shock. I figured if things went south, I didn't want some bastard taking my nice watch.. :guns: But now that I'm a desk puke, I wear a breitling almost everyday and see a few around the base.

Great theread though. I found that as I age, and I'll be 49 soon, my tastes have change a bit. that's kinda why I let my SA BS go. Couldn't see wearing it on the golf course at age 60. I am trying to do less impulse buying, and stick with the grail types. My PAM 320, Ltd Airwolf, CA, and Omega SMP and X-33 will never leave my line up. Most have sentimental value. I am drawn more to Rolex and Panerai lately, as well as IWC. :D

It seems to be more related to your lifestyle and perhaps the image that you want to portray- not necessarily to others, but to yourself... I find what attracts you to a watch is the same thing that brings you to a suit, to a pair of shoes, a piece of jewelry, a house, etc... It is a part of who you are. Sure your taste can change over time- younger people tend to be pulled more in the direction of what is "trendy" where as more mature buyers tend to chose what will be classic and not go out of style within the year. But regardless of all of that- it all comes down to what appeals to your eye and I don't think age has anything to do with that part.
