If he could swing the extra money for the JLC MUT Moon then that would be the clear winner IMO. A lot of bang for your buck with this one, and very elegant with that super thin case!!

I think I'd need to make a careful decision here - my wife or a moon phase ;)

Understood...enjoy the new JLC!!! :poke:

Haha. That's what she said.[/quote]
Lol!

The jlc is beautiful.

So I've taken some time to think about it, and have looked at a bunch of watches since, and I've now turned in a completely different direction - the Montbrillant Olympus. I'd seen pictures and thought it looked interesting, but it's a whole different beast in the flesh. My concern is that I was originally looking for a more classic-looking watch to wear to work with a suit or more formal occassions. Do you think this fits the bill? My second concern is the thicknes of the case size. Doesn't seem to solve the problem of having a watch that will fit under my cuffs.

I see all kinds of watches worn with suits, from high-end dress watches, to sporty watches, to cheap digital watches from the 1980s. I don't know how strict the dress code is anymore, although it might be different in your specific industry or work environment. I think the Montbrillant Olympus goes with a suit just fine, but whether it's a "more classic-looking watch" is both subjective and relative. Compared to a SO or PO, I would say it's more classic looking; compared to a Patek Calatrava, perhaps not. Compared to a TO, AT or DJ...well, that's a tough call. I'd say all three of those are more dressy, but that doesn't mean the Olympus won't work for you in the situations in which you intend to wear it. It is a beautiful watch, no question. It is also a much more complicated and busy watch, one of the busier ones I've seen. Given that all three watches you were considering were simple three-hand models with very clean dials, you might want to think about whether the Olympus might start to annoy you after a while.

I couldn't wear my Evo with French cuff shirts, but it fit under barrel cuffs OK, but just barely. The Olympus is 2mm thinner than the Evo, so I think you could wear it with barrel cuffs OK, unless you have a pretty thick wrist. One option is to wear a dress shirt to the AD and try it on to see how the two fit together.

^ thanks for that feedback. I agree on the busy-ness of it. I loved my SMP Chrono but after wearing the SO44, I now love the simplicity and easy-to-read dial. I hadn't thought about that.

I also looked at the Tag Two-Time with the display back. I liked it, but my wife hated it, as she did the original three in my quest. And I'm afraid she's right - I'll get too bored with them.

So if anyone has any suggestions - in open. Could be a $500 watch. Or a $3000 watch. Although don't want to spend more than $4k, my point is that it doesn't matter. Looking for something dressy but fun.

Thanks again.

So the wife vetoed all three original options? On what grounds, other than she thinks you'll get bored with them? Knowing what characteristics made them a no-go might help us steer you in a better direction. Just on the face of it, all three fit your initial criteria pretty well, so I'm not clear on why you're not going that way any more.

You're trying to stay under $5k? I can tell you what I'd do. I'd get a omega speedy, on a bracelet it can look great with a suit or in a more casual setting. The size is perfect for me, 42mm and not too thick and I have a 7.5" wrist. Plus the classic speedy has some great history behind it, and you could even go for a sapphire sandwich and check out the movement. The only downside is the lack of a date, but that's why God created cell phones.

If not the speedy I'd find a preowned, pre ceramic Rolex sub. It's another one of those great sport watches that crosses over into a more formal setting flawlessly.

I just went randomly over to the Bay. Does something like this work for you?

She thinks they are too simple - in terms of appearance, not complication, and she thinks I'll gets bored with them. When I wa set on an Omega, she was trying to ouch me toward Breitling because she felt most of the Omegas were too conservative looking whereas the Breitlings had more... panache? Anyway, I got one of each but am no longer feeling the love for my SMP Chrono and thought it would make more sense to get a dressier watch since there are many days I need to look more formal am conservative for work.

One reason I like the Olympus is because it seems rather unique an the 4-year perpetual calendar is interesting to me from an engineering perspective. Just not sure of it's the right fit, and as you mentioned, perhaps a bit too busy. Just read recardo's review of it and it pushed me closer toward it.

Love the Reserve de Marche - I'll see if I can get one on my wrist so I can see it in person...if I don't lose my head and grab the Olympus first ;)
