Carl, every time I see that picture it makes me second guess getting the black dial Calibre.

Good to see you here again Carl!

I must admit that in the last couple of years Cartier has been growing on me. There's a Cartier AD less than 5 minutes from my office so definitely worth a visit.

The Rotonde de Cartier jumping hours and the Santos Skeleton are the 2 Cartiers that I'd consider in your price range.

For me, a milestone watch would be something like a Grand Lange 1. For something a little more unusual, I'd get a GO PanoInverse XL.

Montblanc has had a lot of coverage in the watch press over the last year or so (maybe paid for?) and I must admit that they do have some nice pieces, but not sure that anything there really qualifies as my 'one'. I like some of your other suggestions!

I think the C de C is a nice piece, but not that 'special' to commemorate a big life milestone. Maybe in RG, but Roff wants steel.

Ill throw in my vote for the Zenith El P tourbillon. Sweet watch at an awesome value.

After that, VC Quai de L'ile day date power reserve. That thing is sick.

Honorable mentions would be an Hublot with a unique case material, PP nautilus annual calendar, Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chrono, Harry Winston (youd probably have to go precious metal though), or PAM 317.

all good picks. i highly doubt the 317 would interest Roff. I know in the past he has mentioned that hes not a huge fan of Panerai.

If you're in Panerai land, I still think the 339 is the one to get.

I'm 'maybe' in line for a PAM Bronzo, we'll see.

Not really - more confused than ever :? There are a bunch of watches that I could happily buy, but not sure that any of them are the one that I want to be looking back on in 30+ years as the '40th watch'.

Hi Roffensian!
Haven't been around here much lately, I know, but occasionally I like to drop in and remind myself that Breitlingsource.com is the first watch forum I joined, thanks to all of you wonderful people!
The 40th birthday, I remember, was a big deal for me. Probably the biggest since my 21st.
Since I saw your thread, I thought I would give you my 2 cents worth as well!
My good friend Ian, who I met through this forum at a GTG here in Vancouver, got himself a beautiful Cartier Santos Galbee a few weeks ago. Since then, I have been doing a lot of looking and research on the Cartier watches myself. As a result, I will be picking up a new Calibre de Cartier in a couple of weeks:
Image
This is not my wrist shot, but one I have borrowed, by permission of the owner.
I have been into the smaller watches lately, I now have a Rolex Explorer I 36mm and an Air-King 34mm.
When I saw the Calibre, it totally took me by surprise when I tried it on. Firstly, it has a large date window, the trendy type that displays 3 dates simultaneously. Secondly, it is 42mm and I would almost say it wears bigger. It also has the new inhouse Calibre 1904 MC. I won't go into a lot about it here, but here is an excellent link to a site with some good info:
http://cartier.watchprosite.com/?show=f ... =588746&s=
You might also want to look at the fine forum I joined about Cartier watches:
http://revo-online.com/forums/main/cartier.html
If you like gold watches, there are some mighty fine pics of the red gold with beautiful brown dial.
Just an idea!
Cheers,
Carl

My dad picked this exact watch (Calibre) up a couple months ago on a bracelet as well. It really is pretty extraordinary in person. Enjoy!

Maybe you should consult Archie42? He seems to have a lot of good ideas. :D

Good luck with the search.
