Indeed I haven't because I don't know. I'm not about to drop $100,000 on a watch, but I'm trying to be flexible here in finding the 'right' watch for my 40th. If that means that I blow the budget for a year then so be it, if it only costs $500 then that's OK too - I should be so lucky.

On this watch I'm trying not to 'buy to a price'.

Sure, but a range and a max sure helps narrow things. There's some pretty big differences between $10k, $20k, $30k, etc.

OK, so let's say under $50k street price.

Sadly, most tourb's are in precious metal.

Roger Dubuis makes some cool stuff in that range with some interesting complications.

My 40th is coming up this year too. I hadn't thought about it yet. I may go for one of the SS Big Pilot Perpetuals.

You should buy a Vacheron Constantin Tour de l'Île.

I second the Reverso... I think it's an iconic piece, will still look classy 20-30 years from now, customization options available, and it's JLC... I know the rectangular shape is not for everyone but it's definitely on my list for the future...

Yeah, it's still a contender. Unfortunately you can only get factory engraving on the solid caseback models - they won't engrave the cradle. However, they did put me in touch with this guy - www.jcengraver.com who seems to be fairly decent

This could be a good choice.

the Reverso would be a great choice, if you really go for a current production model, only time tells if a watch is a short time fad or has the potential to become a classic or even a grail.

My choice would of course be a nice vintage piece from 1971, as the relevance of 2011 will fade, a watch commemorating your birth year in style will be a good friend for decades.

Yeah that's a good point. It's unfortunate that '71 isn't more memorable in terms of watches, especially for Breitling. There are a couple of 1971 models that I have been looking for but (in terms of Breitling) I would want something different - I wouldn't want a '71 and '69 Chrono-matic for example.

Hi Roffensian!
Haven't been around here much lately, I know, but occasionally I like to drop in and remind myself that Breitlingsource.com is the first watch forum I joined, thanks to all of you wonderful people!
The 40th birthday, I remember, was a big deal for me. Probably the biggest since my 21st.
Since I saw your thread, I thought I would give you my 2 cents worth as well!
My good friend Ian, who I met through this forum at a GTG here in Vancouver, got himself a beautiful Cartier Santos Galbee a few weeks ago. Since then, I have been doing a lot of looking and research on the Cartier watches myself. As a result, I will be picking up a new Calibre de Cartier in a couple of weeks:
Image
This is not my wrist shot, but one I have borrowed, by permission of the owner.
I have been into the smaller watches lately, I now have a Rolex Explorer I 36mm and an Air-King 34mm.
When I saw the Calibre, it totally took me by surprise when I tried it on. Firstly, it has a large date window, the trendy type that displays 3 dates simultaneously. Secondly, it is 42mm and I would almost say it wears bigger. It also has the new inhouse Calibre 1904 MC. I won't go into a lot about it here, but here is an excellent link to a site with some good info:
http://cartier.watchprosite.com/?show=f ... =588746&s=
You might also want to look at the fine forum I joined about Cartier watches:
http://revo-online.com/forums/main/cartier.html
If you like gold watches, there are some mighty fine pics of the red gold with beautiful brown dial.
Just an idea!
Cheers,
Carl

Good to see you here again Carl!

I must admit that in the last couple of years Cartier has been growing on me. There's a Cartier AD less than 5 minutes from my office so definitely worth a visit.
