I really hate ultrathin watches - there is nothing appealing to me about one of those quartz powered Skaagen.

I have a watch or two that have really LOUD movements which I find incredibly annoying. I have an old Russian hand-wind that makes such a racket! I can hear it ticking away clear as bell when it's on my wrist. I hardly wear it as a result.

I also hate a man's watch with diamonds - wholly unappealing and really gaudy, IMO.

I certainly don't agree with this when it comes to the design of the Navitimer since it went to a 3/6/9 layout. With a tri-compax sub setup the only other options would be to put the date at 12, disrupt the 6 sub which is done on some watches, or shrink the subs to require bionic eyes and place the date at 3, but even then it would destroy the symmetry of the Navi dial. A 12:00 date aperture would also over-crowd the dial - something that the Navi dial cannot afford, but the Blackbird can. I think Breitling took considerable care making the date unobtrusive yet functional.

That said, there are some 3 hand watches that look awkward IMO with the date at 4 or 5.

A fair point, sharkman. On thinking about it, I can see that there aren't any obviously better alternatives with the tri-compax layout, so clearly it's not an afterthought.

Even so, I don't like the look of it at all, and I would very likely have a Navi 01 by now if that wasn't the case.

I rather like the look of it on the Fifty Fathoms. If Blancpain put it at 3, it would disrupt the numeral (and lume) pattern. So, similarly to Tom's reasoning on the Navi 01, I think the date placement makes sense on the FF dial. But even if it didn't make sense, it wouldn't bother me anyway. I guess that's the point of peeves, though - they're very individual, and sometimes are based on nothing more than idiosyncratic preference.

And since we're talking about the Fifty Fathoms, it's interesting to note that fifty fathoms actually comes out to about 90m, which is the WR the orignal FF had. Similarly, the original Sub had a WR of 100m - so there was a time when 90-100m WR was what made a dive watch a dive watch.

Having a pet peeve about where the date wheel is located is kinda silly.

Does a blackbird look bad because it has a big date at 12? NO
Does the FF look bad because its between 3&4? Hell No
Does a Montbrillant Olympus look bad because the date is an actual wheel with a hand? Nope

Position of the date wheel is far too nit-picky. Putting the date wheel is a different location from the standard 3 or 6 position gives a watch some extra character.

I think that's why they're called "pet peeves." If they were more significant, they would be "major gripes," "serious complaints," etc.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who doesn't like it when hour markers or numerals are cut off by chronograph subdials. It just looks like an afterthought.

My other hangs ups:

1. Multi Date displays / large date cut-outs - Yes, today is the second and I'm very capable of determining that yesterday was the first and tomorrow is the third.

2. Overlapping sub-dials - Really addds to the confusion.

3. Stubby hands - If the company is going to produce a larger dial, at least keep the same proportion with the hands.

4. Tachymeter bezels on a three hand watch - really? ....really?

1. Good call. Those bug me too. To that I'll add date wheels that only have the odd or even dates as numerals, with dots substituting for the other dates.

3. Rolex Explorer, anyone?

4. What models feature that? That's beyond stupid.

It's obviously dependent on personal taste but, as Roff said, nothing really upsets me.

Except maybe a diamond bezel (or diamonds in general) on a man's watch.

Actually, a date aperture at 4:30 is more ergonomically correct. I'm all over ergonomics. :cheer:

It's nothing major, but I don't like if the watch is only available on a strap. I like having an option for a bracelet as well.
