Same reason as we call the bit at the back of a car the 'boot' and you guys call it the 'trunk'. And the bit at the front of car we call the 'bonnet', and you call it the 'hood'. i.e. probably absolutely no reason at all for the difference as far I can tell! :thumbsup:

Holiday= Holy Day, ie a day off work.

Vacation= Started by William the Conqueror as a time to go grape picking in Nomandy, France.

So if you know anything about the English and French, you can see why we would rather have a day off than go picking grapes for some French invader. :wink:

A French invader? That's news to me. Normally, it's the other way round. :nana:
