So I finally pulled the trigger on a 45mm Planet Ocean. It should be here Monday, I can't wait!

I was wondering if their is anything I should know about taking care of it? Or day to day maintenance? For example, how do you clean and polish it up at home? What about insurance, is it worth it? Any idea what the cost is? Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Congrats on the pick up - but don't overthink it.

I wear mine in the shower when it gets grimy - some mild soap and warm water is all you need to make it look new. Do not "polish" it.

As for insurance, I don't think it's worth it to just insure the watch. You can plan on about $20 for every $1,000 of jewelry you want to insure. So a $3,000 watch will be about $60 per year to insure - but that's assuming a $1,000 deductible (again, this all varies by where you live). Not worth it in my opinion. If it would be extremely difficult and/or expensive to replace it, I'd consider it. But you've got yourself a fairly common watch that won't be hard to replace.

I wouldn't recommend insurance specifically for one watch. If you had an extremely valuable collections, then yes.

In the US most standard homeowner's policies have a $3,000 Jewelry limit. If you don't have anything else in that category then you are likely covered. But the coverage will be limited to a narrow definition of "occurance." Essentially theft and damage by fire, but not flood.

You can purchase a rider that will cover the watch with a minimal deductible, but more importantly covering "All risks." Thus you would be covered if you lost it or pretty much anything else except intentional damage/loss.

Check with your insurance company to see what they have available and what the costs are.

For one watch in the price range of a P.O., I'd likely go with the limited coverage already on the basic policy. As Biz said, when you get into several watches or just one very expensive watch, get the rider or separate coverage thought a company like Jeweler's Mutual.

We have State Farm and the wife and I have a special rider - there really wasn't much of a difference in $$$ when it came to insuring the jewelry between the rider with State Farm and using another insurance company.

Although it's kinda silly for us because most of the really valuable stuff is in a safe deposit box - we just got the rider in case we smash something up or get mugged

Get it covered under your home contents insurance. Mine covers me for up to £7k, that includes away from home and 30 days abroad.

So just soap and water and a towel will clean it up like new? Why do you say not to polish it? Isn't that what they do when you send it off to be serviced? If it gets scratches on the bracelet, they can be corrected through buffing or polishing of some type, right?

I really like the mesh bracelet too. I was already planning on picking on up down the road. One of the watches I was originally looking at was the SOH becuase of the mesh bracelet.

Anything specific item with my current and previous insurance worth over £1500 had to be named seperately on my policy. I think for the small amount you would pay on the increase in premium would be a damn sight better than spending out £2000 plus your watch it worth imo.
