Phase one complete. I picked up a Casio G-Shock for the gym, skiing, volleyball, etc. Thought it was a nice knock around watch that's actually kind of cool looking and has some nice features I can use....still got one empty slot in the five watch case though and need to fill it with a durable diver that can withstand a decent beating in some harsh environments (like steel mills) and keep on ticking....you guys have been great with suggestions thus far. Thanks

I'm thinking of picking up a Christopher Ward. They seem to get good reviews and are VERY reasonable. They also have "classic" options if you want that kind of look.

Ablogtoread.com gave it a thumbs up and other reviews are good as well.

Here's a link to the site - http://www.christopherward-usa.com/men/ ... -dive.html

Keep us updated as to what you wind up getting.

Why not a Swatch diver's watch? It sure is inexpensive for what it is.

True....Financial is not the only concern though. I do want something with some "sex appeal" so to speak. For better or worse, I like when people notice my shit; even if it's in a dirty power plant in CT.

There have been so many suggestions and I have looked into ALL OF THEM (pretty time consuming). At this point I think I'm down to either the "H2O Kalmar" or the "Boschett Cave Dweller". Either one with a grey dial and black bezel, which I really like. I think I like the H2O more, but it's double the price and I'm not sure I like it twice as much.

Thoughts?

For something "different" I like the Tritium glow on the Deep Blue T100 series. LNIB used can be found for 500-600
Would be useful in night or cave dives as well.
Balls of course have the same feature but out of the price range.
Non-chrono master divers can be had used for < $1000.
A Titanium Hydrocarbon Mad Cow just went for $950 used in one of the watch classifieds. I needed 4 links at $50 a pop to make it fit for me so passed.

Personally I would save for a nice used Ball hydrocarbon or diver.

I hear ya, but the point is I don't want to save and buy something "nicer". I already have two Breitling divers. they're great and I wear them almost every day, but I actually need something a little less nice that i can wear in more rugged environments and not be too worried....basically, I need something that, if I shattered the face, I wouldn't want to kill myself.....I'm always on the look out for a nice watch, but in this case I need to dial it back a bit. Something under $1K will set my mind at ease.

The Boschett has a good look. I also like the appearance of the Benarus watch line. What I don't know about those two is the quality level. There does seem to be a good quality level reported for the Christopher Ward owners, though that's just from limited sources. I once owned a Bathys, which I really liked but was part of my sell-off to fund bigger and better watches. Personally, I've been keeping an eye out for an old SMP quartz full-size that isn't too expensive, for weekend and golf duty.

My resident "beater" diver is the Victorinox DiveMaster 500 Mecha. You can find them for around $500-700, but they also have the quartz versions for much less if you're so inclined. They are very high quality and super tough. 43mm, but wear bigger. Here's a shot of mine:

I've also owned about 4 of the quartz DiveMasters and they have all been great watches.

I went outside the box and got the grey dial Boschett Cave Diver....actually I also ordered a yellow dial H2O Kalmar because I'm half an idiot and half an addict.

I've doubled my watch collection in two days and now I need to buy a new watch box as mine only holds five. Oh well, I really love the look of both those watches and I cannot wait to get them.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

I was going to suggest a pre-owned Oris as well - VERY underestimated watch.

But, you're all set. Good luck!
